Title: Turkish holidays
Post by: charlste on July 30, 2019, 11:45:39 AM
With all the price increases on utilities, food, drink etc and the drop in the exchange rate i am wondering whether people will start to look elsewhere for holidays.

If you look at the pound compared to most currencies it's lower. Turkey is still great value compared to the EU, the USA and many other countries.

I think the main reason people look elsewhere is the fact that flights are far to costly at times.

I cannot believe the absolute rip off prices that are going around for flights, more expensive now than school summer holidays, does the turkish Tourism realise its the airlines that are stopping people going to Turkey

We found it excellent value still in October last year when the rate was 7.50 and there had been quite a lot of price increases. Today at 6.76 with assumed more increases, I would still expect it to be relatively cheap.

I have never been able to explain how flight costs are determined to Dalaman. Even today, a quick checks shows Liverpool - Cyprus £210, Liverpool - Dalaman £350, same week. And Cyprus is significantly further...

I'd hazard a guess it could well be at least partly Dalaman's landing & handling costs. We all know what a bargain their shops and restaurants are so maybe they also charge top rates to the airlines for the privilege of bringing in holiday makers.

We booked a one way flight going out with easyJet in October, hoping that the return flights would come down. They haven’t so we have booked to fly to Istanbul spend two nights in a hotel and then fly home, and it’s cost us less, than 2 one way flights back to Liverpool or Manchester.

Most likely reason Ian, but not so long ago they were paying the airlines for bringing tourists in, and the prices certainly didn't decrease.

ROLL ON   early September when Easy Jet release next years flights and October when Pegasus release Gatwick and Manchester flights  who were very cheap for June THIS YEAR.

Good thing our hotel  we like so much have quoted  £ 4  per person per night  lower prices for next june   :P 8) than this year

As we haven't been to Turkey before, I hadn't realised that flight prices were a particular issue.  We went into our local travel agent (one we've used for the past 15+ years) and she found us a great 10 night flights, transfers and B&B package in Calis in October for £500 each.  This is using Jet2 from Stansted (just a few miles down the road from where we live). It was pretty reasonable deal compared with other holidays we'd considered.

Before looking at holiday options, the concern I had was the nosedive £Sterling is taking against major currencies as a result of fears of a no-deal Brexit. That said, this impacts all destinations as it's a currency exchange issue.  However, the TL isn't a major currency and yet the base exchange rate has dropped from 7.3 lira to the £ to 6.72 in the month from 30 June to 30 July (that's a drop in the value of the £ against the TL of 7.95%). By comparison, there's been a 3.93% drop for the £ against the US$ and 2.68% drop against the Euro in the same period (both of which are bad enough).

I remember reading somewhere that Sterling is often accepted in Turkey.  I wonder if that'll still be the case for much longer...

A few years ago, when the exchange rate was in the region of 2.75TL / £, the preferred currencies in Turkey were the £, USD, or Euro, rather than the TL. It was said that in the construction and estate agency sectors there were more £50 notes in circulation in Turkey than in the UK.

You'll find that most traders in the markets in and around Fethiye will accept your £s. I can see Turks being happy to accept £s for many years to come.

I would be more worried about the yellow sea than the tl,
If either my wife or I were sun-worshippers or beach-goers, so would I. However, we're very unlikely to even get our feet wet as Calis will simply be a base from which to explore the history, culture and geography of the area and a feed / drink station - at least this time round.  If we head back to Turkey a second time, we might bring the scuba gear with us   :)
