Have just returned to the UK after 3  weeks in Uzumlu. Went swimming at Sugar Beach Club in the lagoon at Olu Deniz one afternoon & noticed groups of snake like creatures on the lagoon floor in about 6ft of water about halfway across the lagoon. Does anyone know if there are sea snakes in the lagoon or anywhere else around the area & if so are they dangerous?

Bearing in mind that everything is magnified under water, these could be sea centipedes - if so keep away as they can give you a nasty sting which is much like an acid burn.  I was stung by one whilst swimming in Selimiye bay near Bozburum a few years ago and had really hard sore hard blisters across the back of my hand for ages.  I also saw a local Turkish lad who had been stung on the stomach. One night we watched the locals hauling them up from the harbour and they then "pis*ed on them and they split into two much like worms - yuk -horrible things!!!

More likely to be a type of sea slug, completely harmless.

well, I have seen a snake swimming in the lagoon - the opposite side to Sugar beach.  It was 'hunting' around the reeds there - quite long a stripey.

We have always known them as sea cucumbers. I don't know if that is their correct name, but they are completely harmless.

Many thanks for comments, whatever they are they'll have to wait until I go back in May. Next time I'll take my snorkel gear.
