This is the bar/restuant,we were told it only opens for 2/3 months main season....nice cold beer and good food.

Been many times also, one of Turkeys best beaches but, like I have said before....be careful sometimes in the water the under current can be very strong. We formed a chain of bodies once to help people young and old to get out of the water.

Does anyone know how much damage was done by the fire? :o

The fire was away from the beach but you drive through the burnt areas on the road down to the beach. It looks quite bad and covers most of the mountain on one side. The are some apartments by the road which must have been completely surrounded by fire - must have been very frightening.

Is that section of the beach eaisly found when you arrive, im taking family up in Sept.

when you drive into the parking area you will see some wooden walkways follow them the beach is straight ahead

Take the main road to Kas you will see the Patara turn off clearly marked on the right it's a few miles down that road. It's roughly a 45-60 minute drive from Fethiye.

Take D400 all the way down, and you will see a sign post marked for Patara. Go through the village and keep on the same road for the main part of the beach. (Other end of the beach is accessible via another route, but not so easy to find). Have fun, its a fabulous beach - nice shower facilities and good bar.

Drive on the D400 (the main road from Dalaman)to Kemer roundabout and lights and turn right,follow this road until you see signs for Patara. It is a very good road and not too busy, I enjoyed the scenery.

We use the other end of the beach - could never pass directions, as we are never really sure ourselves when we drive - but the dolmus from Fethiye to Kadere takes you there. This end is where the river meets the sea, and its really nice to have fresh water to jump into.
Also lots of space this end for kiteboards (not that we have one!), Not really anything here apart from a small cafe (i.e. no sunbeds or anything).

Much prefer the far end (where pictures taken) than the free-to-enter end where the jeep safaris go. Sand is more grey than white and few facilities, tending to get very busy at weekends.

Not sure the details about bar only being open 3 months are correct. Ive been there in April, May, Aug and October in the past and always been open. Jimmys in Patara does a fine Turkish breakfast

Becareful if you are bathing at the river end of the beach the currents can be very strong there

hello, just back from hols. and went to patara on the dolmus from fethiye. got off after kinak and ova with 6 kms. to walk.
There are road works being undetaken at the drop off point on D400.
After breakfast in Patara (turkish mmmm) we walked on to the beach.
Wow was i taken aback by the ruins Lycian, Greek, Roman. This place is a hidden treasure of antiquity and I will be researching its past history. Then you hit the beach! 12 kms long and most people use the first 1 km next to the cafe/showers/tiolets after that nothing but sea and sand. Most enjoyable, but beware of strong currents west to east.This is really a great treasure of this area, and we hope to return again and again.
nb take your rubbish back with you! lets not spoil this beautiful place.

Frank, nice to see you visited Patara village (I presume that's where you had breakfast). We like it there, so different to the commercial side of Turkey and the people so welcoming and friendly.
Then a visit to the historical sites and the beach - a great day or two out. :)
P.S. When we were there in May last year the bar was definitely open.

Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in Patara? Will be staying in Calis but love the beach at Patara so thought it might be nice for a mini break!

The Viewpoint Hotel in Patara is very nice. We have had many a holiday there.

always use to holiday in patara until we bought in fethiye wonderful beach and very friendly people in the village well worth a visit

Would recommend the golden moon pension in Patara. Stayed there in July for two nights.
The restaurant overlooks the main street, which is very quiet.
The food really is superb.
It takes ten minutes to walk around the town, as long as you do it slowly.
The Pension provides curtesy transport to the beach. (About a 30 minute hot walk)
Beach is magnificent and look out for the nude man.

suehugh - think it's just the Patara Golden Pension. Golden Moon is in Calis. In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, but it might have been me that recommended this place to you when you were planning your trip to Patara earier this year. :) But even if it wasn't I agree it's a very good, friendly place to stay in Patara.

Thanks for recommending to us. It was a really nice pension.The food was authentically Turkish and tasted yummy.We ate both nights there as the atmosphere was good and lots of people there.The village itself was a bit of a ghost town (Similar to Uzumlu)Most reastaurants and bars were empty.

hugh, you are more than welcome. Glad you enjoyed your stay there. I'm usually a bit wary of recommending places as it's all down to personal taste and different people enjoy different things. Such a shame that most of the other bars and restaurants were closed, especially in July when you'd expect them to be open. Bit sad really. But, as you said, the Golden Pension is a good place to base yourself if you want to have a whole day on that wonderful beach, and maybe have a look round the ruins too.

Just a correction. The restaurants in Patara were not closed. Its just that there were no customers. The pension had about 12 out of say 20 tables occupied, so I think they were reaping the benefits of serving good food.As the beach was very busy most days, i assumed people were eating in their hotels or Pensions.
Dont be afraid of recommending anywhere again.

Ah, sorry Hugh. I misread your post about the restaurants. Last time we were in Patara it was May, early in the season, and some places were just getting ready to open up but there were still quite a few people around. We ate at the pension one night and the Green Frog(?) the other. Both excellent meals.
Unfortunately I think the majority of people who come to the beach come in from Kas and Kalkan, in fact I think there are special buses just to bring them in and take them back again, so they miss out on the village altogether. A great shame in my opinion.
