Title: Gocek
Post by: Highlander on July 02, 2011, 17:07:12 PM
As I mention elsewhere, Mrs H and I spend a very pleasant day out to Gocek. Having heard that only certain boats go there now, and only on a Sunday, and not wishing to spend two hours each way on a large boat we decided to take the dolmus from Fethiye. Travel time was roughly 45 minutes but I'm not sure that we didn't take a slight detour to an older passenger's house with a large sack of something or other.

Departure times are as follows and only 5.25 lira per person each way. Might be worth considering.

We've gone by dolmus too in the past and thoroughly enjoyed our day at Gocek.

In agreement there Highlander.  We enjoy visiting Gocek and have done the trip by both dolmus and boat (Sunday market trip).  We really enjoyed the boat trip but going by road by dolmus is a different experience altogether and every bit as enjoyable. You are not tied by times of the boat either, you just please yourself.  Great day out.   :)

We often visit Gockek too Mr H.
No need to travel into Fethyie for the dolmus though you can catch it on the top road.

We often go on the motorbike, fantastic views especially coming back, but we do love going on the boat on a Sunday as we can both have a glass of wine. In our opinion, best pides and huge glass of wine to be had at the Kebab Hospital...I am now thinking that's where we'll be tomorrow :)

The name The Kebab Hospital always makes me giggle.   Have to agree H, we love Gocek and like to potter down on a sunday, do the market and then sit on the sea front and tuck into a large bowl of garlic prawns.. ymmmmm

Had a lovely day there last summer with friends. There was a great bar that also served food right on the shoreline - turn right facing the sea & it was the last place along. Problem is I cant remember too much about the journey home!!

Pookie,
Talking to the owner a few years back he told me that the name should have been "Kebab Hospitality" but the signwriter ran out of space so they settled for "Kebab Hospital"

We visited Gocek and Kebab Hospital both were very enjoyable. We were lucky to see Dolphins just away from our boat,on the way back too, fabulous end to a great day.

Have to agree that the food at the Kebab Hospital is very nice and I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap it was. We sat on the seafront side of the restaurant and I was expecting it to be expensive with all the big yachts in the harbor.

We had a day there in July.
The bay is picturesque.
The views from land are spoiled a bit as you have to peer through the masts of hundreds of boats to see anything.Daft place to put a marina
The meal we had was good and reasonable in price. Most of the restaurants were empty.
There is a small attractive beach, but this is privately owned.
The small shopping streets are really interesting, full of boating paraphanalia and ropes with funny knots and stuff.
Not really a place to holiday though.

Am not sure of the name of the road but if you were to walk or catch a dolmus going straight to the top of Baris Manco Bulvari and get off just as it turns right into Gunlukbasi, cross the road and you'll catch the dolmus to Gocek.

Aside from the many amazing places I saw in Turkey, there is also Gocek. I can't remember going anywhere that was more disappointing. I was expecting Puerto Banus and found something that looks more like a flooded industrial estate :-\

Hmmmm. Now your post has made us think twice Keith.I know everyones taste is different but nothing is more annoying than going somewhere that many people say is great and when you get there you think exactly the opposite.I would like to know what exactly is the attraction of Gocek and is it worth using up a whole day of your holiday to see this attraction.suehugh did'nt seem to rate it either so maybe we will give it a miss.A nice boat trip might make a good substitution.

Maybe that came across as a little more harsh than meant. Gocek is ok, but as suehugh suggested I think it has been woefully planned, if planned at all, and every 'improvement' to my mind scars it a little more. My problem was expectation - I had never been there and listened to tales of half million pound villas, rows and rows of megaboats and I was expecting something mind blowing. What I found was a pleasant enough but nothing special "High Street", a community that simply isn't evident in any way at all, a marina that I still today wonder might not be the Gocek marina as it is so formless and chaotic looking, and new developments that look more like the council "starter units" I used to see on UK industrial estates. At least there is the backdrop of the huge fuel tanks across the water.

I'd still suggest you go - there is definitely something I am missing - you need 300k to buy somewhere nice in Gocek! Thank God I have no taste...

Correct doubletwo - CBF members love Calis but if you showed other people some sides of Calis they would be fortified and "think exactly the oppossite".

So as scunner says "go and have a look at Gocek" - it may not even have to be a whole day visit if you start out early enough.

I really don't know how you would fill a day at Gocek.
We have taken drive down there, walked to the marina and had
a meal.  The restaurants always seem empty.  Then a stroll
up and down the shopping street and that's about it.
It's pleasant enough but, like Scunner I cannot see why the
houses are so expensive there.   I would not advise you against
going, but don't plan for a full day.

I would suggest Kas as a better option for whole a day out.
There are nice winding narrow streets of shops heading down
to some really lovely restaurants that overlook the beach.
If you like beaches you could sunbathe and swim.

doubletwo will correct me if I am wrong, but he is posting about a day out NOT a villa purchase.

Nobody thought they did John. The point is that there must be a reason why properties are so expensive in Gocek, and if we ever discover what it is, we might love it too. For now, we don't :D

The price of a villa in Calis is not a gauge of whether or not it is worth a visit.

We enjoyed our recent visit to Gocek and, despite the property prices, I'm sure that most other people would:D

The price of a villa should give an indication of the quality of the location. Except when it comes to Gocek. It really is a simple concept H :D

We are clearly way off topic and "simple concepts" are certainly all I can manage at this later hour.

Gocek is a good day out and the Sunday boat trip is, in my opinion, excellent value for money.  You get a good sail, a couple of hours in a different environment and if you want to be nosey (and family visiting are always "interested" lol) you can look around the many, many properties for sale.

I mention at the start of the thread that I understood that certain  boats now go to Gocek.

janmack if this is correct it might be ueful information for doubletwo to have.

I assume there are no houseboats. ;)

Houseboats...I wish!
Anyway, you spend a couple of hours in Gocek to do what you want, market, browse around the shops, reataurants (Kebab Hospital is very good I've been told ;))
On the way back to Fethiye they stop for you to have a swim.
For people like me who get restless on day long boat trips, the Gocek trip is perfect.
As far as I know the boats go on a Sunday only.

I agree with Scunner on one point at least: it's largely about expectation.

I had expected anywhere that has a marina and expensive real estate to be snooty and expensive to eat out. Gocek is neither snooty nor expensive in our experience. Bonus!

We usually spend a couple of hours there, have a meal and a stroll  then drive back to Calis. Wouldn't want to live there (even if we could afford it) and never spent more than two or three hours there but the drive there and back and the place itself are certainly worth the effort.
