A very flamboyant character and a joy to watch.

A great man at his peak - oh for such charachters today!!!

I had to collect him from Picadilly Station a few years ago on my way to Man City as a favour for a friend of mine. My 10 year old son was with me and on the way I told him what a legend this man had been and how I couldn't wait to pick his brains and hear some of his stories!

We went onto the platform and looked and then saw this caped figure - looked like batman - with his very large hat on.
He had a very glazed look about him and said nothing to me all the way to the ground after the introductions :(

He got in the car and said to my son - "do you play football" - "yes" he replied - "which foot do you use" - "right" my son said - "how good is your left" - "not very good" - "then practice, practice practice until you are as good with both because that is why the continentals are better than us" - got to the ground shook my hand and said to my son "remember what I told you"

When will England ever cure their left sided problem  ;)

A very funny man.. and a good football brain.
Met him several times while he was with Palace,
coached my boy while he was there.
No BIG characters in his class anymore,
He knew more about Continental Football than most
of the new continental Managers.
R.I.P BIG Mal.

Certainly a one-off who brightened the game.

Can't believe he was 83 years old.  He was a great character something the game lacks these days.

The phrase " They dont make 'em like that anymore" could have been written with him in mind!

I loved his quote " A lot of hard work went into that defeat!  :)

RIP
