A Trip into Turkish Northern Cyprus
« on: October 29, 2017, 14:18:50 PM »
Very weird, we took a trip over the border into TRNC during our holiday to Cyprus. It usually takes us 10 hours plus from getting up to arriving in Turkey, but this was just a 30 minute drive. Suddenly everything changes, obviously but strikingly - all he signs become Turkish language, everything is so familiar - Turkish banks giving Turkish lira, Efes for sale, the kerbs are too high :D

The highlight of our day was having just enough time to nip into a lokanta to grab chicken doner wraps to go.

Famagusta was very interesting- not least the ghost resort in the no go zone.

Some photos

Just like driving into Fethiye 8)

Glad you appear to have enjoyed your visit to our side of the island. Next time, it there is one, do come over to the north coast and Kyrenia.  A very pretty town with a beautiful harbour.

Quite agree. If there is a better Venetian harbour anywhere I haven't been there.

Our first Turkish experience was Northern Cyprus. Prior to that we generally holidayed in Greece, mainland and islands. For some reason, which escapes me now, we decided on Kyrenia for a change and absolutely were blown away. The rest is history, we haven’t been back to Greece since, apart from a couple of weeks ago when we had an Adriatic cruise, sailing from and to Venice. I think our N. Cyprus visit was 15 years ago and it has been Turkey every year since then.  I seem to remember a very very cheap brandy which could be bought for about £1 a bottle. The Turks used to drink it in the restaurants like wine, the whole bottle on the table wrapped in tin foil.   :)

Like a gin & tonic in a dodgy bar.

Glad you enjoyed TRNC.

Yes Sadler we still have cheap brandy.  The local speciality is a brandy sour which is brandy, angostura bitters, lemon squash topped up with soda water.  All alcohol here is far cheaper than in Turkey as we don't have the huge amounts of tax on it.   Even imported alcohol is very cheap comparatively.

We are going to Pernera, Cyprus in June 2018 and would love a trip into Northern Cyprus and Famagusta.  Scunner, did you hire a car or did you go on an organised trip?
