Does anyone know if you can apply for permanent residency after 5 years and what are the requirements.  Also why do Brits have to pay approx 800 pounds for a 5 year residency and other nationalaties pay a fraction of this price. Apologies for putting this in the wrong section it went in Kaya Kaya section!

Busybee,

You can apply for citizenship after 5 years. BUT, you have to give up your UK passport and, depending on gender and age, you can be liable for National Service.

You don't have to be fluent in Turkish but must be able to answer questions in Turkish at an interview.

I dont think you have to give up your UK passport as you can hold dual citizenship if you are British. Unlike German nationals who do have to give up their nationality if they become Turkish.

I heard that the British government allows dual nationality but the Turkish government doesn't.

Turkish Govt doesnt mind dual nationality. My wife, who is Turkish by birth, now holds UK Citizenship and uses both passports for travel purposes.

As long as Turkey knows about it. They are not too happy with citizens that dont own up they have dual citizenship and issue a fine when they find out. (fine is around a shocking £8)
