Title: Eastern Turkey
Post by: hazel dorrington on November 25, 2009, 15:21:59 PM
Having just returned from a fantastic couple of weeks exploring primarily by bus, I thoroughly recommend it. For anyone with a bit of stamina a wonderful, easy, and inexpensive way to travel to see more of the country.
From Fethiye to Goreme then onward to Adiyaman and Sanilurfa visiting the Heads at Nemrut and the mud beehive houses at Harran 12 miles from the Syrian border.  It has just wetted my appetite to see more next time Diyarbakir, Mardin and Hatay and then there is the whole of the Black Sea Coast. So many places to see and so little time.

Wow Hazel - that sounds fantastic - I have just loaded up Google Maps to see which way you travelled and it really looks fascinating!

Well done - if you have any pictures you must put some up on here for us all to see?

We are semi-retiring next year and coming out for 6 months and this is just the sort of thing I would love to do.

We were two retired ladies and think of ourselves as recycled teenagers. We managed to get rucksacks with retractable wheels. Lots of photos over 600 between us. Don't know how to put photos on here but have put 50 on my Facebook page.

My oh used to work in Diyarbakir 20 plus years ago. Although usually ill with heatstroke or food poisoning he used to come home home and tell me about how wonderful it was.
The stuff he used to come home with was so cheap, like 14ct gold puzzle rings and silk goods etc. He said I would love Turkey so lo and behold I booked a holiday and that was me hooked. We have travelled the world but there is something about Turkey that always draws us back. However I have yet to visit the east.

The food poisoning sounds a bit worrying. All the food we had was great if a little strange at times. The strangest was a three course meal which was totaly white. Yoghurt soup, followed by chicken rice and white beans, then rice pudding, with white ayran to wash it all down and off course lots of whte bread.

There are only 3 Hazel Dorrington on Facebook. If you go on profile obvious which one is me. Have put photos to be viewed by everyone.
Longest bus journey was overnight 14 hours, 4 comfort stops and one bus change.
Thanks to the internet we were able to pick our accommodation carefully although the system for booking over the internet never seemed to work. We choose the higher price range of accomm between 30-45 euros per night for the room which we shared.
Best accomm a cave in Goreme with ensuite and jaccuzi, central heating and lovely linen. Good accom further east only available in the big towns clean and modern on par with budget hotels in uk. Good accom out in the country unable to find on the internet. We stayed at Adiyaman before climbing up Nemrut but this meant we had to get up at 3.30am to see the sun rise. We spoke to others who had stayed close by, plenty of pensions and camping grounds but very basic.
