Hi all, can anyone tell me what constitutes hand luggage. Is it literally one bag.
We have always had 10kg, looked on paperwork and we have 5kg each.
We both have laptops, that's 10kg together,do they count and are ladies allowed a handbag with out it being counted as hand luggage.
Appreciate the advice.

Handbag makes it 2 items - if you have one it will need to go in your hand luggage (at least till you pass the gate, Mrs Scunner puts hers in at the gate and it's out again before the flight takes off). The exception is Monarch scheduled (ZB code) flights who allow 2 items as long as combined they don't go over the weight allowance.
I'm assuming from the 5kg that you are flying with TC or Thomson. I have been forced to have my hand baggage checked in for being "too heavy" at more than 5kg (and charged, around £20 as I recall) on both. I have also many times never even been asked to put it on the scales.

It is. Being a pain in the ass when faced with jobsworths, we were once told we couldn't have an item of hand luggage on a TC flight because it was 7kg. "No problem" I said, "That's her (Steph's) bag and I have no hand luggage at all - so we're 3kg under!". No, not acceptable - 5kg maximum per item.
So I literally took a carrier bag from inside the 7 kg bag, filled it with half the contents of 7kg bag, she weighed both, and printed our boarding passes.
I then, to make a point, happily put the carrier bag of things back in the original bag (on her check in desk right in front of her eyes), thanked her and off we went with one 7kg bag. Ridiculous but true.

When we flew back a few days ago she weighed my hand luggage it was 7kg, I was told I would have to pay so on the belt I opened the small case took 6 tins of ham out and put them in my pocket. Then back after she checked the weight

I was once asked/told to remove a Bumbag which was around my waist... and told to put in hand luggage?
Stated it was not hand luggage but the lady said it was classed as a bag ... put this in hand luggage which was not weighed then removed it after check in, replaced round my waist ??? right hand left hand comes to mind.. :o C

Great,it's going to be so difficult.
Have booked another box with parcel2go. I figure 20 quid for extra kg might as well have 25kg for 43 quid.
I,'ll take your advice and put a jacket with big pockets in,and try to sort it from there. Let's hope t cook are not feeling too thorough.

It may be difficult, but you never know. Keep your hand luggage out of direct view and maybe they won't even be interested. Let them know you are moving out there full time and maybe they'll be softer. Just depends on who you get and how they are feeling at that time.

We note that generally T.C don't bother with hand luggage, but occasionally they do. Last time was when they had a sign up say all hand luggage would be weighed. They where charging £14.00 per kilo for any extra weigh.
I must say 10kg is a lot, which airline was that with? T.C. are always 5kg.

Monarch scheduled are 10kg, easyJet unlimited weight as long as you can lift it into the overhead lockers yourself.

The problem we have flying from Luton, is that Monarch allow 2 pieces of hand luggage, as long as they are within the weight ratio, BUT Luton airport has a policy of only 1 piece of hand luggage weighing less than 10kgs. and within their size guidances, so you're stuffed anyway !!

Never had my hand luggage weighed on any airline. But TCook are particularly stingy with their 5kg allowance.
Still Bernie, better than my sons who went to Olu Deniz 2 years ago along with 2 friends, not one of them had thought to book in any suitcases. They found this out about 3 hours before they set off for the airport. We spent the next 3 hours looking for the lightest possible bags and somehow fitting in all their stuff for a weeks holiday. Thank god they were lads - would have been impossible with females!

I,m going to have to give it a go. Monarch Jaqui,you get 10 and 23kg.
I am hoping if I say it's a permanent move they will be a bit more lenient.

On my recent trip back to UK with Thomas Cook I went back with hand luggage only, and carefully kept it down to 5 kgs, that was 2 changes of clothes to last me a fortnight ! At Dalaman they didn't even look at my hand lugggage. 2 weeks later checking in at Gatwick with a 20 kg suitcase and this time I had gone way over in my hand luggage because I didn't expect them to check the first thing he did was ask for my hand luggage on the scales. He also told me that my small handbag had to be included in the weight. It was very embarrassing, I stood there stuffing as much as I could into my pockets, it still wasn't down to the 5 kg, and although my case had been dead on at 20 kg he told me he would allow me to get 1 more kilo in my suitcase which was full to bursting. I spent an embarrassing few minutes trying to stuff things into the front pocket of the suitcase, and eventually he let me off with about half a kilo over. I was hot, sweaty, and extremely red when I'd finished !!

We flew back to gatwick from DLM with TC a couple weeks ago and they were weighing all hand luggage. Lots of pocket filling whilst in the queue and were allowed through with 14 kg between the 2 of us by saying there was a laptop in each bag.

A few years ago an elderly couple in front of us had suitcases which where both 20 kilos and hand luggage at 7 kilos each. They where told it would be £14.00 for each over the limit kilos in each bag £56.00. A row started and the couple would not move. It held the queue up for 20 minutes eventually they where taken out of the queue and off somewhere to pay the excess.
So, please weigh you bags before you leave for the airport, scales available in lots of shops for as little as £2.00. It's a boring experience standing in queues at airports, but it can double the standing time and leave people behind you in the queue angry and frustrated, when people don't check how much they have in their luggage and start opening suitcases and putting things in their pockets, or worst still arguing with staff. >:(

On our last trip in December, we took great pains in packing two suitcases with as much household stuff as possible. Our hand luggage was bang on 5kgs each.
We were well annoyed when we found whew were 5kgs underweight on our main bags. Tools, hammers, bedding left behind. Oh and Sue mentioned shoes
So , your right jaquie. We will invest in a decent weigh scale and use it.

The meanest one we had was an Easyjet flight from Dalaman, we were 2kg total over on our 4x 20kg hold allowance (AKA 500g each) and were taken away to pay £18.

After encountering some over zealous staff at Dalaman,we have taken to weighing our luggage at the airport
On a spare check in.
This time we have 2 x 30 2 x 25 and 2 x 20kg. And sent boxes over. My fault entirely as I am not ready
to let go of everything. Still we won,t have a plate to eat off when we get there. Slik is just rolling his eyes
and keeping his gob shut. Crazy whats important to you,when you have to leave it.

We have two scales. One in Scotland one in Calis. I saw scales recently in one shop for 99p. So cheap enough for everyone to have a set

I was always going to buy a RufusRoo jacket with all the pockets but never got round to it. I have a lightweight 3/4 length jacket with big pockets which I drape over my arm or the luggage trolley. I also carry some strong elastic bands and have on occasion filled the sleeves and secured the ends with the elastic bands. In over 5 years, I have never been told to 'wear' the jacket and I can tell you that sometimes the weight has been 10K. Now that I have said this, I will probably come a cropper on my next trip but up until now it's been OK.

I love Karaokemark's method - break the linings in your coat pockets and fill the inside bottom of your coat with tins of ham. Genius!

When you book a flight it is clearly stated what your baggage allowances are and if you want to purchase more you usually have that option. So why do so many people who have to pay for extra baggage weight winge about how much it costs them.Its not like they don't know because they do.Far to often we have been in a queue and you have idiots at the front who are way overweight with their baggage and there they are on the floor taking things out of their cases holding everyone else up.As like another forum member on here we have a set of our own scales to make sure we are not going to be overweight.The last thing we want is to spend our holiday money on extra baggage charges.The scales are as said

Why do some people think that the weight rules are any different from the no smoking rules.
I confess that it drives me insane seeing huge bags being loaded into overhead lockers at take off never to be touched again until landing.

It was the airlines deciding to charge for checking in luggage that caused this, not the people with huge bags (although not huge, the limits are clear). When we travel for a weekend away, we take all we need in hand luggage. This is because we can have a weekend away without having to pay for the pleasure of taking and checking in a suitcase.
The fact we don't touch our hand luggage in the overhead locker for the entire journey is absolutely irrelevant.

I would just like consistency. It irritates me when they weigh your hand luggage in 1 queue but not another. 1 year Thomas cook refused 3 of ours because they were 1/2 " too big for the basket size guide, the handle stuck out of the top. When we got on the plane we saw loads of people with much bigger hand luggage than ours. We just happened to get in the queue that Mrs Jobsworth was checking in.
