Title: New information on registering a foreign phone - July 2014
Post by: Marggie on July 15, 2014, 09:09:05 AM
Here is an article from Voices Newspaper outlining the rules for registering a foreign phone.  The main change is that you now have 60 days from date of entry to Turkey to register instead of 30 days.  Communications Law No. 5809 .

We didn't have to go to the police station last week. Tax office with passport... Pay 12O tl... Take receipt to Turcell. Pay 40tl... That's it...

Mercury, this is another example of different areas applying different rules - the person was from the Didum area.

The main change being that people now have up to 60 days from entry to register.

Presumably that's effective immediately? In which case, brilliant.
I want to register my iPad so that I can use it on the network if I need to, but my 30 days runs out next week and I'm not sure I'll be able to get to the tax office before then.
(Rubbish, I know. Fell into the trap of thinking I had loads of time, and all of a sudden it's running out.)

Presumably your Ipad contains a SIM card, if it doesn't have a Sim then you won't need to register it.

It does take a SIM Marggie as it has 3G capability. I've never used one in it yet as I bought it not long before we left the UK - directly from Apple, so it's unlocked - but as I understand it I will still need to register it to avoid it being blocked.

Or instead of paying to register your ipad, buy a mifi which you can connect your ipad, and any other devices to.

If you buy your mifi on amazon (£39)
Would you need to
Register that in Turkey or simply buy some data from turkcel
Priced them last month in Fethiye and cost around 280 lira
Including 4g data

Here is a link to an earlier thread on the subject of WiFis:

http://www.calis-beach.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=54711.msg359458#msg359458

There is a lot of very useful information on this thread and I understand that a WiFi purchased in the UK will not work in Turkey whereas a Turkcell wiFi will work in the UK.  Loz wrote quite extensively on the subject and I bought a 3 store Data Sim yesterday, it works fine.

Try a proper Turkcell shop as opposed to an agent, I believe they are cheaper there.

Kev 2 things, firstly you may find the mifi you buy will not work in Turkey (like I did)
secondly you will need to register it.
I bought a Turkcell mifi for 125TL from the Turkcell shop by the otogar. I had the sim already.
