Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has announced that a group of military forces have engaged in a "coup attempt" against the government.
Yildirim made the announcement late on Friday, as he vowed that the "perpetrators" will be contained.
He said that a number of generals are involved in the takeover of the government, adding that it "will never give up democrac

Watching Turkish News says one Military group took head of Military hostage in Ankara and declared revolution. Very bad if so for Turkey. Last time it happened they were in for 14 years. If they manage to stop this group then good.
-
BBC reporting that the Military were in control, watch this space
-
From experience if the Media is shut down and the streets empty they are in control, if international communications are also closed down then looks like they have succeeded. Have not been able to communicate with any friends there, so...??
-
Wish everyone out there all the best. Hope you are alright. It is all over the news here. They are saying on the news there has been a curfew and the secular rule has been eroded lately . The military are confirming they have taken over. Tanks are at Ataturk airport.
-
Unable to use Twitter now so assume government have blocked social media?
-
Celebrations are slowly starting but also people hoarding.
I saw people leaving with 8 loaves of bread.
At least 15 people queuing for Denizbank ATM trying to pull out money, sacred that accounts get closed off.
-
Some excellent and informative reporting being shown on, Aljazeera news channel. Live interviews and up dates.
-
Watching al jazeera too..they are saying a failed coup..
-
Below - two of the latest posts from BBC Live page:
Turkish state broadcaster TRT has gone off air in the last few minutes, Reuters reports. Earlier, soldiers reportedly took control of its offices and an announcer read out a statement declaring martial law.

Relatively well orchestrated coup - EU source
Posted at 22:35
A European Union source tells the Reuters news agency: "It looks like a relatively well orchestrated coup by a substantial body of the military, not just a few colonels." "They control several strategic points in Istanbul. Given the scale of the operation, it is difficult to imagine they will stop short of prevailing," the source adds.

Second by second update on here http://news.sky.com/story/live-turkish-army-says-taken-power-over-country-10503062
-
Ironic that RTE is using a mobile phone via twitter to appeal for help.
Pictures of Gul on a mobile skype, talking but no sound, just pictures.
-
Some reports are saying Erdogan has left the country in a jet and some reports are saying he is in a Marmaris hotel.
-
National curfew in place and military has shot at protestors in Ankara.
RTE is calling people to go on the streets.
-
Taken from UK GOV website just now -

Latest update:
Summary - We are aware of the current developments in Turkey. We are urgently seeking more information. Until the situation becomes clearer, we advise you to avoid public places and remain vigilant
-
Soldiers are being arrested by police. Seems coup might be failing.
-
Lots of people going to the ATM to make sure they have their cash! The mosques have called a prayer for Erdogan. Soldiers have been ordered back to their bases.
-
A lot of high ranking generals appear to be supporting the coup..Very little marine traffic on the Bospherous apparently.
-
High ranking officers are not supporting the coup. They're all RTE's men.
Highest officer was a witness as his daughters wedding.
Rumours are that bombs have been dropped on Aksaray palace.
-
Seventeen policemen where killed at a police station outside Ankara in a gun battle and a fighter jet has shot down a helicopter. Lots of fighter bombers bombing in Ankara. Some people did support Erdogan on the streets.
-
Streets in Istanbul are filled with RTE's supporters.
-
French reporter in Istanbul says that the streets are quiet.
-
I'm watching live feeds where you can see protestors attacking tanks so reporter is probably in a different area.
-
RTE is appealing to people to flock to the squares he banned them from. No tear gas this time.
-
They would not have got this far without the support of generals apparently. Annette Young is a French journalist in a hotel near the Bospherous and she says it appears relatively safe at the moment. There is confusion as to who is in control but there is gunfire. Martial law is in place but people are refusing to stay in . Annette has spoken to some people who have been stocking up on food as the troubles could go on for some time. By and large people are staying indoors to stay safe .
-
Rumours are that it is wasn't a real coup to start with but just a plot for RTE to increase his power.
All cigarettes have been sold out in the local shops here.
-
Sounds as if the shops are busy! What is the Efes situation?
-
Watching Turkish News now and people took back and now reopened TRT channel all celebrating. Also Istanbul bridges reopened. Many soldiers arrested. Many people out in support.
-
Special forces have just rescued the Military hostage in Ankara and 9 high rank officers arrested. All showing on Turkish News
-
So is that it then.? Is it over.
-
Not sure. BBC and Sky saying senior military officials have been arrested. They are all RTE. confusing but it looks like both sides are claiming victory?
-
News is saying ~Erdogans plane has landed in Istanbul.
-
Reuters are saying more explosions in Ankara at the parliament building.
-
Bombs have been dropped on parliament.
-
Big fire in Taksim Square. TRT are not ready to go back on air quite yet.
-
Rumours are that CNN Turkey is being raided by someone, don't know who.
-
Some of the soldiers have surrendered to the police.
-
CNN taken by Military soldiers. President has landed at Ataturk Airport. No reports of bomb at Airport as Sky news reporting. 140 soldiers been arrested. Watching live Turkish news now. NTV
-
RTE is claiming that the hotel he was staying in got bombed just after he left.
-
Report by BBC
Fethullah Gulen, the exiled Muslim cleric whom President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused of plotting against him, has condemned the coup attempt and denied any role in it.
I condemn, in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey," he said in an emailed statement reported by The New York Times "Government should be won through a process of free and fair elections, not force.
I pray to God for Turkey, for Turkish citizens and for all those currently in Turkey that this situation is resolved peacefully and quickly,” he added. “As someone who suffered under multiple military coups during the past five decades, it is especially insulting to be accused of having any link to such an attempt. I categorically deny such accusations.

Reader's comments are mostly anti-Turkey.

Good, well-balanced comments from people who clearly have an informed understanding of the political situation in Turkey as well as a deep well of compassion for their fellow citizens. Oh, it's Express readers isn't it? Bit like Daily Mail readers except they use punctuation other than exclamation marks.

Over 140 people have lost their lives. Still they fight on in Ankara. Another sad day for Turkey.
-
Wonder how all the ships that are usually going along the Bospherous were stopped .Apparently there were not ships last night and it usually very busy.
-
Watching Turkish news now showing soldiers being stopped by civilians and many of the soldiers distressed saying they didn't know anything about coup. They were apparently told they were being sent for Military training and to help police. Some as young as 19/20 looking scared.

Dead easy. The Turks have a traffic control system in place on the Bosphuros, The Turkish Straits Vessel Traffic Service (TSVTS).

I fully understand them being scared knowing the number of soldiers that got their throats sliced.

By who Dutchie?
-
Lynched by AKP supporters.
-
Did they show this on TV? as i have been following all news channels since last night, i must have missed this information. I did see a fake picture on social media showing a soldier being restrained covered in blood but on closer inspection the pic was taken in 2006 and was related to a different event. An accident that occurred and people were helping the soldier.
-
Loads of pictures available and some really horrific. If you're on Facebook, you can see some here.

Scroll a bit down the page.
-
I checked your link Dutchie and one pic on there is the one i spoke about. Pic edited to not show date and it relates to an accident in 2006. Another one edited I've saw live video footage on news of this today.

Apparently Turkey could soon be at war with a fellow NATO member. The USA.
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/690106/Turkey-threatens-war-America-cleric-Gulen-military-coup
They're stopping all movements on and off of Incirlik Air Base and have cut the power to it.
-
I don't know which picture you're referring to but the soldiers are being treated in a despicable way.
Here you can see how they have been stripped off their clothes and are being hit and kicked whilst entering a small van.
http://www.milliyet.com.tr/Milliyet-Tv/video-izle/200-askere-ciplak-gozalti-wsXmKCsXEGWX.html
-
So hard to understand how people can behave this way - these soldiers were surely just following orders?
-
It was a pic i had mentioned earlier and it's on the link you sent also but anyway i don't condone violence in any form but these people are showing high emotion and anger at the thought of their Country being taken over by Military. Many will remember 1980 and don't wish to go back to those dark days. Unfortunately the soldiers got there anger. I couldn't imagine what emotion i would feel if it happened in my Country. I'm seeing from both sides. Apparently most of the soldiers were not aware of a Coup and were told they were going to help Police for Military training. They only realized something was wrong when people climbed on their tanks. Many of them were also helped by civilians and shielded from a minority of very angry people.
-
So what happens now?
-
I was wondering which picture it was you were referring to.
The man on the ground with blood covered face?
-
Yes there is a guy next to him holding the rail. He is wearing a silver watch.
-
Does it matter which photo is being referred to? Horrific events last night and certainly some soldiers paid the price for being where they were at that time. I really do not want to see any images of what happened to them. But it did seem to be that lots of them were very young conscripts.
So who orchestrated last nights events? I wonder......
