Title: two signatures now required for Bank cash withdrawal joint accounts
Post by: Sleuth on July 12, 2017, 18:28:12 PM
Some people on turkish social media outlets  are now saying that the Turkish  Banks are now asking for two signatures  for cash withdrawals from joint deposi accounts and not just one ?  A new law introduced these last couple of weeks with some banks, and the rest will follow ....  anyone know if this is a fact ?
A lot of people wont be happy with this  should this be the case .

I am only quoting from two seperate posts  on a social media outlet .... one persons account was with yapi kredi.... apparantly they are introducing it for `security` reasons,  and all the other banks will be doing likewise ...
not good news for joint account holders if one partner dies....  account then gets frozen  :-(

If true, it would rather defeat the point of having a joint account rather than two singles.

That's always been the case.

Yes that's always been the case, but when it was only one person to sign for cash withdrawals, the account was still active as the Banks on many occasions  were not informed about the death of the other joint holder.and the remaning partner could still use the account.  with two signatures needed that's blown that  way round of solving that problem

Many ex pats here think its like the uk where with a joint account, if one partner dies the other partner automatically takes full control of the account. In turkey its different, the government takes over and it could be years whilst its all sorted, and other members of family are considered, as well as the turkish government taking a cut.

What happens if the account is in just one partner's name and the partner dies?  Is the account also frozen?, if so, it is a Catch22 situation.  :o :-\

Just make sure you get Phil to sign a couple of withdrawal slips before you bump him off.  ;)

How about internet banking ? Two signatures to move money electronically to uk? Or to another account?

So you assume it is him that has the account?

Well, as we're talking about joint accounts I'm guessing you'd need his signature. But hey, you've just gotta be different.  :)

Perhaps JH was suggesting the joint account might be with her bit of stuff on the side (of whatever gender).

Oh eck, I have a joint account with TEB and my husband died last year and I know the difficulties of a Turkish bank account when someone dies.   Does anyone know if you can close a high interest account and a current account with just one signature as I had better get this done quickly.

I'd be more concerned about making sure all money is removed before making ANY enquiries about closing it, or the reason why.

Does anyone have the new law reference number for this. I have been scanning the turkish media but can't find any reference to it.

Catrus I should draw the money out steadily, as you will need all account holders signatures, to close the account

Don't close account as that can cost up to s couple of hundred lira depending on bank. We just withdrew most of our money in cash leaving 1000tl in account which we drew out later from ATM leaving about 10 lira in the account. We told bank staff we needed cash same day as family problems. Staff helpful and no problem drawing three figure cash out. Then deposit it in another bank (cash) in one name only

Would you like to expand on that please.  We've closed accounts with Finans, Garanti and Yapi Kredi over the years and not paid anything.

We have also closed accounts with two Banks in Fethiye and are now onto our third Bank. Never cost us anything to close our accounts.
