Now that you can use your own data plan abroad does that mean that we can leave the data roaming on when we land at dalaman

Only if your on a UK Vodafone contract, not sure if any other provider includes Turkey?

Peter you can get a 30 day UK Vodafone data sim for your Mifi/phone and cancel when you get back from Turkey.

can you ring a turkish mobile for free using the vodaphone sim in an unlocked uk phone ? thanks

You can ring it. But you'll need to take out a mortgage if they answer you.  :)

My understanding is that if you are calling a Turkish mobile from the UK with a Vodafone SIM then you will need a mortgage to pay the bill, BUT .... if you are calling a Turkish mobile from Turkey whilst roaming with a Vodafone SIM then it is all part of the plan provided you are using one of their "Big Bundles".

I've been looking at a VF Sim only deal and it states "Calls and texts to standard UK mobiles and landlines (01, 02, 03) within the UK. Also applies to local calls and texts to standard mobiles and landlines in any of the 50 destinations of our Pay as you go Europe Zone [PDF: 677KB] plus calls and texts to standard UK mobiles and landlines from those destinations" so yes I agree only calls made to Turkish mobiles whilst in turkey included.
