Previous threads have reckoned £400/ month is enough to live on.  Probably more than you would need, but better have too much than too little eh?[:o)]

You lucky thing you:D!

Thinking of doing a 6 month sting next year myself-that's as long as I can keep my car out there apparantly:(!

So long as you dont do the holiday-maker bit for the whole year 100 quid a week will be plenty, if you hit the bars and restuarants every night then you will need a lot more.

Don't think it will be a mistake.  You only live once and if you are young (how old?) then you will have many years to recoup any financial loss and the experience will be wonderful.  Even the bad times.  Often they are the things you laugh most about at a later date when you have time to reflect.

I too don't want to leave it too late, but I am battleing my 'adventurous streak' and my being 'sensible you've got a jod and committments streak'.  Bored with work so very loosely planning to change jobs next Aprilish and then have a sabatical from work for 6 months!

Wish it were me going so soon!  Won't be till next year now, but not been back that long so the memories will have to last!

Just read your introduction.  Your with an electrician called Cetin.  I know one!  I saw him (the Cetin I know-there are 1000's of course) with a tall blonde with curly longish hair is that you by any chance (very slim chance, but calis is small!).

5x this year, like me-is it in Calis or Fethiye you spend most of your time?

we find it a comfortable level including eating out 2/3 times a week, but not at the touristy spots. :)

Tribalelder you say £400 comfortable is that for two people? or one?
Title: taking a year out from England
Post by: smudge on November 09, 2005, 13:02:58 PM
Two adults and a baby, and we live very comfortably on £100 a week, we use the markets for food and eat out at least twice a week, we dont drink much alcohol and we dont use the tourist restaurants.
If living here then the average amount will increase as you need to bring in routine maintenence costs, wear and tear etc but that wont concern you yet.
Good luck with your plans.

Canim.....thats two....covers the lot all bills, food, eating out as I said and there is always a plentiful supply of falling down water in the fridge! We don't run a car as we find the Turkish transport system very good and it perhaps would not cover say new white goods or a hifi etc. :)

Canim

if you use the search facilty you will find this topic covered in many areas - heres one
{A Link to an old CBF topic was here - no longer available}2981&whichpage=1&SearchTerms=bekir

Depending on how things pan out for you will also depend on your needs from portable telly (1yr stay) to plasma screen (eventual perm stay), that bits up to you.

As most people will tell you try, migros, erin spot and any of the other that you find in the search options, approx £100-£150 each for average, if you get a satelitte receiver/dvd player then you do not need a hi-fi as it will play cd/dvd's.

best wishes
Dippz

Good luck Canim.  After the day I've had I wish I was joining you.  It's cold and damp, my jobs been c**p and I'm fed up!!  However, don't you worry about a thing!  just go and have a good time, don't worry about the money, if you drink spirits take them with you.  You can get some wine's quite cheaply (as we found out last month from our little corner shop - 2.5 TL per bottle and it wasn't bad).
Take care and have a great time!

Title: taking a year out from England
Post by: smudge on November 11, 2005, 18:09:46 PM
Very easy, simplest way is to see Asli the translator and she will do all the paperwork etc for you and not expensive, can point you in the right direction when the time comes, or if you fancy a day out you can take a boat ride to one of the Greek islands but might be a bit wet and windy in march.
Title: taking a year out from England
Post by: canim on November 11, 2005, 22:26:09 PM
cheers smudge thats good to know...knew you could catch a boat but didnt know if they sailed in march...been bad weather and all...could you point me in the right direction to Asli before i go please so i have things straight in my mind before i go...thanks
Title: taking a year out from England
Post by: smudge on November 11, 2005, 23:28:38 PM
Asli has a translation office in the road behind the PTT in Fethiye, which is next door to the army recruitment centre which is up the road from Gima, any estate agent will point you in the right direction, we have the phone no somewhere. If i was you i would go straight there and start the paperwork for a year visa, take loads of passport photos, bank book to prove you can support yourself for a year (only need a couple of grand ) and rent book or Tapu and she will do the rest and will work out cheaper than boat trips.
Not many tourist trips out of season but if you want to go that way you will have to find a friendly skipper.

Thanks thats very handy to know...i must be green didnt realise you could get a yearly one...Will make that my first call of port when i arrive...Have you any idea how much it will cost? As for money i was going to take it all out with me and deposit it in a turkish bank account...is this the best thing to do or just withdraw it from my english account when i need it?

If theres anything else you feel might help me please feel free to write it down for me....as all the help i get is very much appriciated ....Thanks Christina

Definately open a Turkish Lira Bank Account.....paying about 17% interst at the moment.Check out the cost of a residency visa for one year it may well work out cheaper to renew your normal 3 month visa by going to rhodes or Mace on a day trip or even uk if you can get cheap enough flights. Website for Asli is www.fethiyetranslation.com :)

Canim, most people seem to bank with Finans or Garanti. We are with Finansbank and have to say we have had great service from them. Ayse who deals with us foreigners is wonderful, everyone is full of praise for her, nothing is too much trouble for her.

Get yourself a nationwide account & pull it out £300 a time plus do the above with some of it.
Failing that then go into your bank, tell them what you want to do & you should be able to fax or telephone them to carry out the transaction once you have a Turkish bank account. We did this with Nationwide. This way however costs you around £40 by the time you pay the bank here & the charge from the bank in Turkey for receiving the money.
In my opinion the Nationwide is a must have account - great exchange rates & no charges to withdraw cash.

paid a visit to Nationwide bank today....told them what i want to do and guess what....CANT do it ....can open an account and withdraw money using card but cant fax or telephone them to carry out transaction once i have my turkish bank account...so looks like i will have wads in discreet places...lol BANKS they seem to think its their money and not mine... Thanks for the advice Linda im still going to open an account with Nationwide because they dont charge to withdraw money with cash card and they say they have a good exchange rate...we will see.... I think there may be some cpnfusion here. You can transfer your money from Nationwide to a Turkish Bank. However they may require you to give the instruction personally with all the relevant account numbers etc otherwise any one who has your account details could phone up and empty your account!
It may also be that you need a Sterling account to transfer the money to in Turkey. Not certain on this as I always transfer to a sterling account anyway :).

your right tribalelder they do need instuctions personally....I was hoping though that if i set up a pass word with them that maybe they would do it while i was in turkey...Will have to rely on soon - to -  be exhubby to transfer it now once i have opened an acount....lets just hope he doesnt pull a fast one on me and do a runner with my cash....lol.... thanks to everyone who has spent the time to try and help me....17 days to go YESSSS not that im counting mind...lol :D

Hi Canim - congratulations on your move.  8) Very interested to hear your progress. Out of interest which company did you get your insurance through[?]

Im sure you will adjust to native life - specially when the sun starts shining again  8)- but it can be daunting - as i tell my turkish friend: 'in Turkey i am like a kid!!' :DEven opening a bank account or going to buy everyday stuff is both an adventure and a challenge - in England its all so easy cos you get to learn little by little as u grow up!. Good Luck!
