Crabbit......if I read this correctly, irrespective of which network you are on if you buy a turkcell sim card register as you suggest and then revert to your normal provider your phone will remain unlocked?  Mine is registered anyway but the info might be useful to others. :)

Crabbit,

Sounds great but does it work with Avea sims too?

Well Wife arrived in Turkey this afternoon & phone blocked. Not impressed as the sim had £20 put on it just before we left in May & we believe phone was registered.

Hi Crabbit,

What if your phone/SIM combination are already locked due to the crackdown.  Is it too late - doomed forever?

Our phone was locked when we went out in May, but we put sim in very old Nokia and it as been on permanent since and so far so good.

Bewva won't it just be the phone that is locked? same happened to a friend of ours when we was there two weeks ago she bought a basic nokia in Fethiye for about £40 and put her sim in that everything is fine.

Will this work for Avea sim owners????

What should I do to have the devices coming from abroad registered?

If the device was purchased and began to be used before 12.07.2005, it's covered by the amnesty and could continue to be used against a registration charge of 5 TRY even if there's no invoice for it. This registration can be done by sending the serial number (IMEI) to 9858 or at Avea Communication Centers by paying the registration fee.

To all those who have emailed me asking to register their mobiles.
If i have replied to you, your phone is either blocked or now unlocked.
If i haven`t replied, you will have to do the following,
You are required to register the *************** IMEI numbered handset with its invoice attached at the nearest Turkcell point. You may continue using your Turkcell account.

PS, Scunner
Get the Starfish Paypal account back up & running, there are quite a few £`s waiting to be donated.
