Counterfeit /Non Bioequivalent Drugs

Not sure how you will go about the injections, but for me I told my GP in UK that I was going to live abroad and what would happen about my presciptions and would I still be registred and get NHS treatment for my annual checkups. She said I can live abroad for as long as I like and still come back on the NHS, she writes out my presciptions for three months at a time, my friend picks up the presciption and gets the drugs from the chemist, he then posts them to me, standard post, takes about two weeks. When I need renewals he just ticks the boxes on the white part of the repeat presciption part and hands in into my health centre, my GP just raises another presciption and my friend goes and picks it up and the cycle continues.

I thought I would get similar drugs here to save my friends responsiblility and for me having to rely on somebody, as nice as it is for him to help me. I also though (stupidly) I could save money as one of my drugs is not available on the NHS, I have to get a private prescription and it costs a fortune, but they do not do the brand names I want in Turkey.

I do not have a GP here and you do not register as you always go to the chemist for advise and drugs here, they act as GP's. But I do have a doctor who i treat as my "private consultant" at Letoon Hospital I met him accidentally and he was the first doctor I have met who knew exactly my ailments and didn't have to refer to a book, so i felt comfortable with him and can talk to him. Hopefully he will do my annual biopsies and blood tests so I do not have to go back to UK.

I have a complete list and telephone numbers of all specialist doctors in all hospitals (Esnaf, Letoon, New state and Old State hospitals) and also thier private consulting numbers, if you want a specific specialist doctor email me thru my profile and I will send you the details of all the doctors in that field. Sorry, but I wont recommend anyone.

The only chemist I trust in Fethiye is Serhat Eroglu at Eroglu Eczanesi opposite Gima both pharmacists speak good English and I have always received the right things at the right price, unlike a lot of other places where they see a yabanci coming.

Five months ago Stuart, I told her exactly what I read on here and she said "rubbish" as long as I am a British Citizen and have paid my NI in the past I'm still entitled to it. Which makes sense when a foreigner turns up and gets free NHS. Also just recieved new prescibed drugs and a request for smear, TMI, I know :-\.

LeeGlo,

B12 injections are available here. My wife buys a pack, several ampules, from the chemist, she keeps them in the fridge and goes back to the chemist with the syringe and ampule and he gives the injection when required.

Like all things here it is best to check this with the chemists in Fethiye before you make your final decision.

Thanks Dippey for the info (I have emailed you for the list) and also thanks to Apollo, I'm pretty sure if the B12 is available in one town it probably is in most reasonably big towns. Thanks again Glo

It's not just in Turkey you can have counterfeit drugs. A couple of years ago here in the UK they admitted that 20-30% of our prescribed drugs were counterfeit. They perhaps do try a bit harder to stamp out counterfeits here but it still happens. I have no idea what % now of counterfeits the UK is running at but they definately have not stamped it out totally.

It'll keep on happening too until the major pharmaceuticals stop selling drugs at extortionate prices that cost them pennies to produce. Add to that the fact that they sell them to rich countries at sky high prices & poor counties much cheaper (but still nowhere near as cheaply as they can be produced) & you have major movements of drugs from country to country to country enabling the counterfeiters to step in at any stage & plant their placebo drugs.

I swear I've had counterfeit drugs here as sometimes I really feel ill whilst taking my 'drugs for life'. Ptoperly made tablets shouldn't crumble when popped out of the packet, but they do! Get a good batch & I feel OK again but then along comes another bad batch & down the slippery slope I go again.

Training up on our 'super machine' so we can take responsibility for our own health. I trust that a lot more than trusting prescription drugs. This time next year I hope to be up to speed enough to start taking myself off many of the drugs.

Linda
