Safe way to pay using a card in Turkey
« on: February 23, 2014, 08:44:22 AM »
I wanted to buy something online in Turkey but it declined my debit card from Garanti, when I called to see why it is a security measure. I had to go into my online account and set up a virtual debit card (if you have a credit card with the bank you can also do this) It takes a few seconds and generates a number expiry date and 3 digit code. You then transfer money on to the card (in my case 75tl to have a steamer delivered which was 65tl cheaper than the local stockist).
You can transfer money both ways any time with no charge.
I have never used google chrome till now, every page for online shopping has a translate to Turkish option so it makes it easy, which is not good if you are a shopaholic like me.

Mark - that's interesting and probably explains my frustration in never being able to book coach travel on the internet or buy on gittigidiyor (which I manage to do on PayPal) with my TEB or ING debit cards.

I have resorted to walking to the Pammukale office in Gunlukbasi and telling the nice chap the online price and then he gives it me for that price :-)

Is there a special name for this card process - is it as simple as "virtual card" - so that I can see if TEB have the same option on their web site?

Does the virtual card have a16 digit number etc like a normal card?

On Garanti i just went on the cards tab and it is there, gives you 16 digit number and expiry date and cvv 3 digit number was really easy to set up and if your card is compromised there is no money on it.

Thanks for that - just looked at it online with TEB and it appears as you say - Virtual Card - but there does not appear to be an option to do it from my Debit Card so as I don't use credit cards I will pop in and ask if it is possible - thanks for the heads up  :D

Mine is a virtual debit card Ian as I don't have a credit card either.
