If you want to do it professionally, there are Security Companies out here, who will come and fit a system to your home.

Our friends had a safe delivered, a day later her apartment was broken into on the second floor,
safe tipped over balcony and gone.

Depends on the safe.  Ours took four men to carry in and they where all blue in the face.  Also, if you have valuables in the safe and your safe is robbed you are covered by insurance.

When my safe was fitted it was drilled so far into the floor, I believe my downstairs neighbours use the other end of the screw to hang plants on

I know your covered by insurance Jacqui, but that don't help when  a lot of sentimental things have gone,
and a safe that took 4 men to lift in, could be carried out by 4 men,
