A Turkish friend from the village mentioned that the Uzumlu Belediye is closing, and moving to Fethiye. When is this likely to happen and and where will we go to pay bills, etc. Also the position of Mayor may cease.
-
I think Fethiye are taking over a few of the smaller belediye. I know Ciftlik is changing after this year (whenever their year ends). Not sure if the offices are closing though but if they are we too will have further to go to pay our bills.
-
As far as I can work out it's at the stage of a proposal in parliament. Provinces with more than 750 000 population would become metropolitan (büyükşehir) provinces - this would include Muğla. If this happened, there might be lower level reorganisation and Üzümlü might lose its belediye status and be administered direct from Fethiye. Unrelated, there was talk a year or two ago about Üzümlü losing its belediye status because its population was too low. Anyway, I don't think anyone's going to be travelling to Muğla to pay their water bills any time soon.
-
Any update on this please, I know Fethiye is taking over Üzümlü, but when and are the local office remain open.
-
All correct. It all happens after the local elections at the end of March and hopefully it will mean many improvements for Uzumlu and less illegal builds. ;D
I would presume bills will be paid in Fethiye but not too sure about that.
This has been known about for over a year now.
-
and at the meeting with the Mayor last week, he confirmed that if he gets re-elected, the cost of your water will fall to the same as we pay in Fethiye.
-
Another advantage could be if we are part of Fethiye , council charges can be paid online

Water can paid via Internet banking, but not as yet the council tax.
-
Yeah, meant water
-
Would this have implications for the Uzumlu Mushroom Festival and who would organise it. Any idea if it is going ahead this year
-
Uzumlu Mushroom Festival 25/26/27 April 2014 8)
-
Should the Belediye close they should also increase the dolmus service as more people will travel on them to pay their bills and they are already overloaded.
-
Agree with the Dolmus Mary especially in the summer, if the put a couple of extra ones on the evening it would help.
-
What is a Belediye ?
-
A town council
-
Thank you
-
So if it closes what happens to all the people who work there, will they be moved to the Fethiye office.
When the UK closed all the small council offices and built great big new ones, all charges went up.
I say keep the Uzumlu Belediye, and keep Uzumlu just as it is, there is no need to change anything I love it just the way it is.
-
Hopefully it will be the best thing that can happen to Uzumlu by coming under Fethiye....
Illegal builds will hopefully be stopped because the cousin/sister etc that has ok'd them in the Uzumlu Belediye will no longer be employed and more stringent checks will take place. ;)
Water rates will be the same as Fethiye and everyone elses instead of 2-3 times the price! ;D
We should get roads after 8 years of false promises >:(
I could go on but I for one will be glad to come under a bigger and more accountable council after all what have this current lot done to improve the village in the last 5 years?
Nowt, zilch, nothing, where's our taxes been spent?
The current mayor of Fethiye has already said that if re-elected he will strive to keep Uzumlu as a special place in nature, keep it as a village and halt too much more development...now that's got to be a good thing in my opinion :)
Lets hope he gets re-elected..

And we all know if that's what the Mayor says in his election campaign then it will happen, maybe, possibly, probably and more than likely probably not!
-
I will definitely be voting for him.

Hopefully it will be the best thing that can happen to Uzumlu by coming under Fethiye....
And it could also be the worse.
-
How can it be worse Sus?
We have no road surface , no street lighting and pay over the odds for water.

When you bought your house were you told you would have a paved or tarmacked road and streetlights? I agree with you there are not many made up roads only dirt tracks to a lot of houses, we are lucky we have a made up road and a street light at the end of our road, could do with another one at the bottom of the road as well, but does not bother me not having one, what do they pay for water in Fethiye how much more costly is water in Uzumlu?
-
2 points 1 the water is double the price and 2 you have still to explain how you think things can get worse????
If we have no street surface or lighting how can it be made worse. I am intrigued

But you still have not said what the price of domestic water is in Fethiye and what we are paying in Uzumlu.
Things could be worse under Fethiye as House Tax, Rubbish Tax etc increasing, just like it has done in the UK when they got rid of the local councils and the villages etc came under one big council.
What makes you think that if Uzumlu comes under Fethiye that hey presto roads will be done, street lighting will be done and what every else you want Uzumlu to be upgraded to will suddenly appear.
-
I have said no such thing. All I have said is we can get no worse. No road surface / lights now- so if the new council do nothing we will be no worse off!!!
As regards the water price what I find unfair is in Fethiye everyone pays same price. In Uzumlu you pay for all water at double rate if you have a pool
-
Sus, 5 years ago the current Baskan block paved the roads in and around the town square, even block paving some villagers drives! When the workers came to a foreigners house the block paving stopped. We had a meeting with the Baskan to ask him about the roads and block paving. His excuse was that he had run out of money, but when more money became available he would do all the roads. Well 5 years later, and 5 years of house taxes later, absolutely bugger all has been done in the village. So where has all the money gone?
-
Adds to the charm of the village. This is what we all fell in love with the slow pace of life back to basics etc
Back out in May, can't wait
-
Fine in the summer when everything is dry. But for those of us who live here all year round its not very charming when you have lakes outside your house and you are ankle deep in mud!
-
Well I find paying double price for all your water simply cos you have a pool, quaint and adds charm to the village!!!
-
So by having roads in Uzumlu it will loose it's charm! :o
Only someone who holidays here could say that! Try having a lake outside your house when it rains...
In Fethiye, Calis, Ovacik etc etc they all pay the same for water whether they have a pool or not! In Uzumlu if you have a pool you pay 3 times what someone without a pool pays...so 3 times more to do your washing, shower etc etc ! Surely not fair? Reason given by Baskan was it's special water!
As we've already reported if the current Fethiye mayor wins the election he has already said he wants Uzumlu to retain it's special village charms but he will sort out the roads and bring water charges into line with Fethiye..now that's fair.
As for comparing what happened in UK, when small councils closed and came under bigger authorities, to what might happen in Turkey that's like comparing press freedom in UK to Press Freedom in Turkey...it doesn't compare!
Uzumlu will only benefit by having roads, it will looks a hell of a lot nicer and hopefully an end will be brought about to stop the endless building (some illegal but passed as legal by the current council) and that will be the biggest benefit to Uzumlu maintaining it's small village charms.
We all want Uzumlu to keep it's village feel and charms and bringing it into the 21st century will not harm that...
Oh and when we bought 7 years ago, Yes we were promised roads by the Baskan!
-
Which Councils have been made bigger in the UK? If anything it has gone the other way. In 1996 the 8 counties in Wales were transformed into 22 Unitary Authorities. What this meant was that instead of 8 Social Services depts, 8 Education Depts etc there had to now be 22! As the population base in some of these Unitaries could not sustain the new Departments, the Council Tax had to rise to pay for it.
-
Looking at what the Belediye in Fethiye have done not only to the town centre but the promenade road they should be congratulated and I hope and believe that they will do the same for the village, it does not matter what the actual charge for water in the village it IS unfair that we as foreigners pay 3 times as much as the locals and I know for a fact that a lot of them do not pay but we being Brits do pay, it is unfair also that the blocked paving was not done throughout the village, strange how it stopped and did not go beyond the residents that did not have a vote in local elections, or am I being cynical ;-)
I love Üzümlü and would not wish to live anywhere else although at the moment I am a summer resident/ tourist only but still pay my taxes, the ex pats have bought a lot of cash and employment to the village, and of course we can not forget the battle led by Fi and Eric and the great fund raising effort by them and many others against the cement factory if it had not been for the expats there would I have no doubt be a cement factory belching out its poision in to the village.
I love Üzümlü and it is one of the few places where I can truly relax.
-
Thank you Sunny Boy and can you imagine how spoilt Uzumlu would have been if that Cement Factory had not been stopped :(
Never mind beautiful clean fresh air but inhalers all round..lol 8)

Oh and when we bought 7 years ago, Yes we were promised roads by the Baskan!
And after Fi & Eric's new BFF, Mayor Saatci, has personally put a surface on their road to make it easier for them to sell, he might even get to look at our dirt track that makes theirs look like a motorway! :) lol, fat chance! :)
-
So what question did you put to Mayor Saatci Hamlet and what was his answer?
-
I wasn't able to attend Rimms, as I stated prior to the meeting.
Also I do not usually get involved in politics as from experience not only in the UK, I have never come across a Politician that pursues anything that has no benefit to themselves or their immediate friends & family.
-
Glad we didn't think about politicians or politics that way as we prefer to at least try talking and give people the benefit of the doubt!
Oh and the question we asked was about all of the unmade roads in Uzumlu, and for his, Saatci's, plans for the future of Uzumlu so why make it personal about our road and our house sale?
We have been lobbying the Baskan for the roads to be sorted since before the last local elections which is 4 years longer than our villa has been sale. >:(
Sorry if it upsets some people that we get of our arses and try to sort things out rather than sitting on our arses waiting and hoping for things to change ;)
-
;D Lol ;D
-
As a former (short lived) resident of the village, when reading Uzumlu related threads I usually envisage Radio 4s "The Archers" being transported to the Turkish countryside
:o
-
As someone who has never heard The Archers pray tell me is such a description good or bad?
-
I will answer your prayer ! It's a nice little radio programme about the Fletcher family and they are mostly Sagittarians and living in Hastings. Do keep your eye out for Harold though. Good thing then and hope this helps ! ;)
-
Thanks Scorcher
-
"The Archers -an everyday story of country folk" On balance I think I prefer to eavesdrop on the politics and intrigues of village life rather than participate daily so for me The Archers is a good thing.
After six months in residence I realised I was better suited to the simple life of Fethiye and quietly slipped down the hill... :-X
-
Ah the old question- which is better Fethiye or Uzumlu- I couldnt possibly comment!!!
-

Horses for courses me thinks I love Fethiye and as I have said credit to the Mayor and what he has done over the last five years, let's hope he does the same for Üzümlü.
-
Fethiyes my fav place in Turkey
-
Mine too. I just love the character and the buzz the place has, I also like the fact it is a place where people live and work and not just built for the tourist. Add to that the natural beauty and what is there not to like?
-
Exactly. Plus its big enough to have all your shopping, leisure, entertainment needs without being too big and grimy. A real wee gem on the Med
-
it does not matter what the actual charge for water in the village it IS unfair that we as foreigners pay 3 times as much as the locals and I know for a fact that a lot of them do not pay but we being Brits do pay
This is a charge that pool owners pay, it isn't aimed at foreigners. We have Turkish neighbours who have a pool and they pay the same rate as we do.
-
I am a foreigner without a pool and pay the lower price 50krs a ton/meter
