Title: I Could Eat a Horse
Post by: Colwyn on February 21, 2014, 09:56:11 AM

Princess Anne wants a debate on this issue. So, by Royal Command, should eating horsemeat be encouraged in the UK to improve standards of horse welfare?

I don't have a problem with this, after all, people all around the world eat so many things that we wouldn't think of, on a daily basis, some of which we in western culture would not dream of, such as dog, snake, scorpion etc. Even small songbirds as they do here in Turkey.

Evidently - since the horse meat scandal it's become much more sought after in the UK. No problem with me.

Had some tripe tapas the other week in Barca. Lovely - but looks like sick  :)

Maybe eating horse meat is the reason that most of the "royals ", & their consorts, have a very strong horsey look !! In that case, let THEM eat a lot more of it !!

A few years ago I would not have been bothered, but now, as my Daughter in Law has two horses, Hugo and Beth and I go out and stroke them and give them carrots, I have become very fond of them,  they are family pets, so, on that basis I would not eat horse, it would be like eating our cat.

Horse with carrots - just add a bit of mash ........ mmmmm ;-)

I know what you mean Jacqui - I wouldn't eat dog for the same reason.

I've no problem with horse meat or any other meat providing it's labelled as such.
The horse meat scandal was about conning the public for profit and I don't recall
many companies being punished, in relation to the size of the scandal.
It certainly showed how crap our food standards officials are.

I'll keep a look out for a leg of Shire.

Horses make a lovely meal for the whole family. A cat would just be a starter.   ;)

Could I eat horse meat.  Yes and I have ..... very nice too as I recall if a little sweeter than a beef steak.  I think the important point is, as overs have observed, that it is displayed as horse meat, and certainly never mixed with other meats to put in food such as pies or lasagne, again unless clearly marked.

It's advisable not to eat large quantities of horse meat as it can give you the trots.

I don't want to put the cart before the Sunday lunch, but if the views expressed here were representative of consumers as a whole it might be worth some enterprising supermarket trying it out. Or would it be picketed by Thelwell types?

Horsemeat IS available to buy in the UK. There are only half a dozen or so abattoirs licenced to process horses and, as it's regarded as controversial by many, the meat's not widely advertised for sale.

Perhaps HRH could put some of her nags up for slaughter and help drive the debate.
Many years ago I used to buy horses for my father in law (for pleasure) but most of
the horses going through the markets were bought to send to the continent for horse meat.
We lost a couple of horses through illness and the knacker men bought them and they were
used for pet food in this country.
The trade has gone on for years, but the debate hasn't.

Now who's turn was it. ?

PS.      The supermarkets have been trying it out for years Colwyn.         They just didn't tell us.!

Yeah, we used to have a pet lamb in Iran, Larry and we took him with us to Garden Parties and other events all the time with a little hat and a sort of necklace made from one of those things you used to put on elastic in front of the hood on Baby's prams. Alas, he grew faster than we expected and the time came for Chops, Slow roasted shanks and amazing Curries. All the tasty morsels in the gardens obviously contributed to his delightful flavour!
