Title: Exchange rate mystery.
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on August 30, 2015, 17:45:19 PM
I noted on another Forum today someone saying the exchange rate in Oludeniz had dropped today to 4.35.  I have looked online and it seems to be around 4.45.   Wonder what is going on in Olu ??

I know someone who got 4.35 in Calis today. Exchange rate has dropped to 4.50 so tourist rates have dropped also.

xe.com will give you the current and historical spot exchange rate,  which is what tourist rates will be based on.

If they are changing money in a 'change shop' they will get a lower rate than at a bank.

Had a text from my uncle yesterday who is coming to visit in a week or so - he said he was only being offered 3.9 in the UK.
I've told him to bring the bare minimum with him and change his pounds over here.
I know it's always better to do so but that seems a huge difference!

It's 4.21 at Thomas Cook just now

Thomas Cook are the worst people to exchange with.  They will always rip you off.

I know you are not a big fan of Thomas Cook, but they don't rip you off on this subject. If you place your order online and pick up from one of their shops you ALWAYS get a better rate than any of the UK banks or post offices etc. I only change the bare minimum before I come to Turkey but I would never use anyone else.

We use TC for lira and euro and have found them better than most Have never been "ripped off" by them

With respect Jacqui, In relation to currency exchange rates I don't see that anyone can be "ripped  off".
Surely, you look at the rates available and select the one you prefer.
(Not necessarily the best)... Unless of course you have had a very bad experience in this regard.

I actually tried 5 or 6 places local to me recently to obtain EURO's online.
Thomas Cook were right there with the others...
Although for ease actually exchanged at Sainsburys (1.3338)

If you go to Martin Lewis's website, he has the top ten places to change money. T.C. are not there.
As Liz just proved T.C. are offering 4.21  The exchange rate is around 4.40-45.  and as a member said 4.49 in Fethiye.
Even Marks and Spencers and Debenhams are offering 3.36  I would say T.C. is a rip off.
Take a look here.

It's actually 4.36 which is very competive I agree Jacqui. (That's only available with an M& S card though)
The point I was making is they are all very hit & miss at times.
Ironically I actually walked from Sainsburys  the other day as the rate on the board was 1.30 something and yet two days later online pretty much the best I could get locally.

O.K. I made a mistake it is 4.36 and M.&.S. offer only a slightly lower rate if you do not have an account,  Debenhams offer the same whether you have an account or not. 4.36.
My excuse, went to bed at 5.00am this morning and was up at 10.00am. Horrible flight with some very noisy people in front of us, drinking and shouting and eating egg sandwiches, the worse thing was one of the party farting and being proud of it... Disgusting  and so smelly, glad they all went to Marmaris.
So pretty tired today.
I stilll standby my saying T.C. is a rip off.  I would not give them anymore of my money.  I would hate them to take me for a ride with their exchange rate.  4.21 is ridiculous.

Have you ever thought of running for government ?  :)

No, they do not allow people with a title to do that.   :)
I see Roman's Yacht is now anchored off Calis.   He asked as us for drinks tonight, but we are too tired.  :)

I see USB is tell us the Lira is 4.60 to the £1.00 today.  A nice little earner for T.C.
I would advise anyone to get a Halifax Clarity Card and draw your money that way, don't give it to T.C. to diddle you.

Aggghhhhhhhh Jacqui - how can they be diddling or ripping off anyone.

They publish their rate and you buy or you don't. End of. :(

Yes, but many people get the offer of changing money and do not shop around, they just assume they will get a good rate.  As you see Liz thinks 4.21 is good when she could go to Debenhams and get 4.36 or wait until she is in Turkey and get around 4.60.
A lot of people are not as savvy as we are about getting their travel money and trust companies like T.C.

Funny, there seem to be a large number of people in government with titles. Most of them ending in "er".  ;)

Jacqui, I did not say I thought it was good in relation to exchanging money in Fethiye, but it was a lot better than the 3.99 quoted by Wordbid who started the post.  We have had a Halifax Clarity card and Nationwide Flex for many years which we use to get the best rate abroad, however if we need to get some to take with us have always found the TC rate on the day we want to change better than most local travel agents. I know Martin Lewis website shows higher rates but for us popping into s local shop suits us better Recently we went to Italy and the best rate for us for euros at the time was M&S using their credit card, so that's what we did, still shopping locally, whilst using Halifax Clarity when there too

Liz, If you want to go local Ramsden's offer  4.32 and so does the Post Office.  So they both beat T.C. locally.  ;)  :)
I think T.C. take enough of our money with letting them have even more. >:(

Yes, but we are speaking about Lira and this is a Turkish Forum so we would be changing Lira not Euros.  As I said other places on the High Street are better than T.C. for exchanging Sterling to Lira.
