No Lance, Android is the name of an operating system, a bit like Windows, but runs on mobile phones.
What you're thinking of is called a netbook.

Also, with an Android phone you can connect to the web, send emails etc, same as you can with any smart phone, iPhone etc, they're like mini computers but obviously have small screens

Could well be an Android netbook Lance, but Android is the operating system not the name of the device.
Windows and mac were the main operating systems on computers, laptops and netbooks and now Android is appearing on them too, not only on phones.
It's supposed to be very good. I would read up about it on a teccy forum if I were you.
Review websites are good for this too as users post their experiences.
I'm no expert but usually Google these things and get other peoples opinions.

Hi I have recently upgraded my mobile phone and now have a Samsung Galaxy S - the software within this phone is known as android.

Kayakebab is absolutely right in that it is just the name of the software which differentiates (if that is the correct word) it from IPhone.  I can access my email and the internet(as with my previous smart phone which happened to be a blackberry).  The main benefit being the speed of access to the internet and the amount I can now see on the phone as the screen is much bigger than the blackberry.

Again, Kayakebab is correct in saying there is a lot of good support on the internet - the one I see most frequently is "androidforums" - any question I type into google that relates to my make of phone usually takes me to the Android Forums site.

Not sure if this particularly helps with your initial question...

Take care

Debbie
