ZenMate Changes gggrrrrrr
« on: May 30, 2015, 16:17:48 PM »
ZenMate appears to have made some changes which I'm not very happy about.

Today I discovered that my location had been changed from the UK to Romania which means accessing sites like BBC iplayer isn't possible unless you pay to take up their Premium option. How very rude!

This is what is says on their relevant website page

"What's new - Romania as a new free location while Switzerland and UK go Premium.

We've added Romania to join in with Germany, Hong Kong and United States as our free locations!

We only want to provide the best possible experience for our users, and we now offer a better and faster browsing experience to our free users on our new Romanian location.

Don't worry, Switzerland and United Kingdom will still be available as a Premium location together with United States West, Singapore, Canada and France.

"Don't miss that you can try out our new Premium service for free!

Verify your account via the central ZenMate dashboard and get a 7 days of free Premium!

Please note that the Premium trial will start from when you click the link in the verification email to verify you account."

Good job tomorrow I'm getting my new all singing all dancing TV box set up by our very own UBT    :)

I am testing DotVpn for Chrome since a few days and it's working fine so far :

betternet has been recommended for ipad and hola for pc

Not sure they offer the same excellent and extra services that ZenMate offers though, am considering paying the yearly premium as it's not exactly expensive!

I usually don't pay for software except for antivirus & security.

Besides this  , I also added the chrome extension 'IP-Address' in order to check whether the VPN software I am using works properly.

Anyone looking for an alternative to ZenMate should read what John says about Hola here before installing.

You're right Nichola - I've updated that post, Hola is now a complete no-no due to security concerns.  Such a pity as it had so much promise with it's geo-unblocking capabilities.

Hi John, or anyone else do you know anything about mith.co - it was recommended by someone else also disgruntled by the ZenMate changes, and subsequent slow connections etc. I have a feeling it is very new based on the recent set up of their FB page.

http://www.mith.co/

They have a version for chrome too

Its too early to say Nichola.  I remember when Hola appeared on the scene and it all looked kosher (  :) ) until the server security sites started to look more closely at it.

I think what we have to remember is that there is no such thing as a free lunch (pun also intended).  Someone, somewhere along the line has to pay for the servers, the bandwidth, the IP addresses, the software, the advertising and the wages of the small geeky guy who makes the coffee and orders pizza.

Their business model, like Hola, is to offer a paid for "Premium Service", which according to them will allow the free element to survive.

Will they do a "Hola"?  I don't know so it's probably a case of give it a try but be aware of potential security issues.  Only install it on one browser and use a different browser for things like banking and email - the ideal would be to use a different machine for important internet stuff (banking etc) and have a dedicated one for general browsing using these type of networks - that might sound a bit paranoid but bear in mind you are trusting these folks with your internet traffic in its rawest form...

I know people like a free VPN, but for what it's worth.... I use SurfEasy VPN, which costs me around £25 per year and can be used on up to five devices simultaneously. You can also switch the devices it's active on as and when you like.

This lets all three of us use it on our laptops, iPads and iPhones - we're never all of us on all three devices at the same time so no problems so far!
