Post by: JohnF on June 07, 2016, 09:15:49 AM
Reports that fouteen killed and thirty six injured in Beyazit this morning when a car bomb was detonated as a Polis bus went past.

Beyazit is the area at the top of the Kapili Carsi (Grand Bazaar) and the bomb went off close to the Hilton Doubletree.

I can only see these incidents escalating, given Reg practically declaring war against the Kurds.  Sad to say I think he sees these deaths and injuries as a price worth paying - by others not himself - if it will help achieve his desire for his autocratic Sultanship/Presidency, and further erosion of secularism and democracy in Turkey.

If, now that parliamentary immunity has been lifted, the deputies from the south east of the country find themselves charged then excluded from parliament then we will definitely see a rise in this type of attack.

I fully agree with you JohnF.

Also ISID "promised" attacks during the ramadan so that could be another issue.

And if all wasn't bad enough...this morning 4.6 earthquake in Bursa which is not good since it could set off the unstable plates in the region there.

Muş strikes me as an unusual choice, but given its location I suppose its fairly close to the action in the south east.

Just been told there are a lot of tourists bailing from Istanbul today, mostly those in the hotels at the top of the hill near where the bomb went off.  Must be paying a fortune for flights at this short notice...

Today a bomb attack on a police station in Mardin province.
No figures yet about the number of victims but the pictures show horrendous damages.

Turkish news also states 3 dead (1 police and 2 civilian) and 30+ people wounded.

Apparently they were trying to drive the car into the police station but guards opened fire and it then exploded.
Sounds like it could have been a lot worse if they hadn't been stopped.

Today a bomb attack on a police station in Mardin province.

Its funny, we get all up tight when something goes off "in our back yard", but these bombings and attacks have been going on for months in the south east.  The civilian deaths, the security forces deaths and those that the government say are terrorists continue to mount and we don't see a thing in the western press - apart from maybe the Guardian, Connie Letsch has had some good articles published and Al Jazeera (westernish) have done a fair bit of reporting from down there.

I don't know what the death toll stands at - in fact I'm not sure anyone does.

A further twist in the immunity issue is that not only did he sign off on it today, but in one fell swoop little reginald replaced most of the judiciary with individuals sympathetic to his grand plan:

Turkish gov’t shakes up judiciary with decree shifting more than 3,700 judges, prosecutors (http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-govt-shakes-up-judiciary-with-decree-shifting-more-than-3700-judges-prosecutors.aspx?pageID=238&nID=100164&NewsCatID=338)

Expect more violence I think.

@Dutchie - that first para wasn't having a go at you personally!

Edit: little reginald just announced today that 7,600 terrorists have been "neutralised" since 20th June last year...

I stick to reading the Turkish (online) newspapers so am very much aware that these attacks are unfortunately happening on a daily basis but like you wrote, most of these incidents don't make it to the Western press.

The death toll of today's attack has risen to five: 2 police and 3 civilians.

I can't recall the exact figure but around 550 so-called "şehit" have been killed by terrorists since June 2015. Civilians are not included in this number, just police and soldiers.

Apparently the number is higher than the number of soldiers they lost in 1974 when the Turks fought a proper war in Cyprus.
