Title: TL slipping again
Post by: KKOB on August 26, 2019, 09:21:20 AM
The value of TL seems to be slipping down again this morning.

According to xe.com at 9am it was at 7.11 to the £ and 5.802 to the $

It had fallen as low as 6.38 to the $ on the Asian markets when they first opened this morning in what was described as a 'flash crash'.

After today's announcement by Trump that he'll totally destroy and obliterate" Turkey's economy if the country does anything that he does not like in Syria, it's going to be another unstable time for the value of the TL. It slipped from 7.04 this morning to 7.16 this evening.

Mrs KKOB and I are off to Istanbul next Monday and we're watching the money markets more closely than ever.  :)

The rate will almost always be better in Turkey. Best to get £50 - £100 changed into TL in the UK for the first few days and then use your Revolut card.

Absolutely right...I've had a few auto-exchange orders on my Revolut card and they've executed at 7.45 and 7.46...significantly better and if the rate keeps rising, I'll keep exchanging more.

We know that Turkey is not one of the 81 countries that have so far applied to the IMF. Which makes sense, given Erdoğan’s distaste for the institution. He will turn to the IMF only when it becomes obvious not only to economists, but to himself and Albayrak as well, that there is no other route.

https://ahvalnews.com/turkey-economy/toxic-sunset-cocktail-over-turkish-economy

When / if Turkey's application is finally made, will it get priority ? Or will it have to get inline behind the other 81 ?

If I’d waited for the price to go to 8.60 I’d have made an extra quid and a bit.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but unless you are buying thousands of pounds worth it makes very  little difference really. 1 lira worth about 11.5p?

Agreed. In the scheme of things the extra few lira means very little. However for the Turkish people the decline of it's value could fuel even more inflation which is not good.

It is “just a matter of time” before the weakening lira and the low reserves lead to a crisis, said Nikolay Markov, senior economist at Swiss investment firm Pictet Asset Management,,,,

Some investors warned that depleted foreign currency reserves and negative interest rates may be a precursor to a full-blown financial crisis.

Anyone relying on interest from a Turkish bank account should be considering their future investment.

I agree MrT but the word on the Sokak is that the Turkish government is heading towards devaluing the TL, which will accelerate massively the trend seen recently and close countless Turkish businesses forever.

As it stands let’s be clear - the Turkish lira has lost nearly 5% just this week, and a full third of its value in the last year.

Very probably.

The TL has lost 2.46% in the last 24 hours. To put that in other terms, if you had £100,000 in TL in the bank, you lost around £2,700 pounds today alone.

In other trades gold is up 65% on the lira in one year. While it has a fascination watching a currency as volatile as the lira I often wonder what decisions the typical one man or one woman business owner makes regarding holding lira, buying FX or gold. It can't be far short of a continuous nightmare.

"Turkey’s economy would emerge stronger from the current global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic", Albayrak said

Somehow, I think he may be telling porkies.

“I am calling on my nation, do not buy French products,” Erdoğan said in a televised speech at the presidential palace in Ankara on Monday.

Given that France is among the few countries which Turkey maintains a trade surplus with and the country’s exports to France total $7.9 billion while imports register at $6.8 billion it'll be interesting to see if Reggie's latest spat will have further detrimental effects on the value of the Turkish Lira.

I don't think it'll make much difference for the short-term as the season's ended. Depends on whether and when they lift the advice for the start of next year.

It's just gone to 10.8154. Might be worth taking a punt on a few hundred quids worth of TL as a long-term investment. Depends on how much further you think the TL's likely to fall before / if it recovers.

Yes, there's a bit of a recovery due to the lifting of Covid restrictions but there's concern in the money markets about the return of 'Global Inflation' and the fact that Turkey has very little left in the coffers to fight it.

Fingers crossed for the Turkish people.

Well, it was good to see that my prediction of a further tumble for the TL didn't happen.

BUT, it's just been announced that "Turks increased their holdings of foreign currency in bank deposits, signalling renewed concern about the stability of the TL. Some Turks are also switching their savings into foreign currency because returns from bank deposits in TL are barely covering the erosive effects of inflation."

Whilst the majority of us on this forum are interested in the value of the £ against the TL it's really all about the value of the TL against the USD, and to a lesser extent the Euro, that drives the markets these days.

Title: Re: TL slipping again
Post by: KKOB on May 28, 2021, 13:05:26 PM
Seems that I was a bit premature with my prediction of the TL going to 12.20 last week but, unfortunately, it's now heading that way.

I've posted the entire article from Ahval as I know that members in Turkey can't access it without using a VPN.

Turkey’s lira hit an all-time low against the dollar and euro on Friday on concerns about lax monetary policy and ahead of hefty foreign currency debt repayments.

The lira fell 1.1 percent to 8.59 per dollar, beating a previous record of 8.58 per dollar set in early November. It dropped to 10.46 against the euro.

The embattled currency has slumped 16 percent since mid-March, when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sacked the head of the central bank the day after he raised interest rates. Since then, foreign investors have sold billions of dollars of Turkish stocks and bonds on fears that the bank will cut rates of 19 percent prematurely.

Inflation in the country accelerated to 17.1 percent in April, the highest level in major emerging markets outside of crisis-hit Argentina, which is implementing an International Monetary Fund rescue programme.

“Each burst of depreciation risks triggering a fresh lira crisis as it begins to feed back into higher inflation, which the central bank cannot fight off because it is unable to credibly hike rates,” Tatha Ghose, senior emerging markets economist at Commerzbank, said in a report to investors.

On Thursday, the World Bank urged Turkey to keep monetary policy tight, saying it was the only way for the government to ensure strong and sustainable economic growth. The central bank kept interest rates at below inflation for much of 2020 to help the government engineer a borrowing boom via state-run banks.

"The outlook this year is very uncertain and hinges on the course of policy ... especially monetary policy and the effectiveness of COVID control measures," World Bank senior economist David Knight said at a panel discussion, referring to rising global inflation and a switch to tighter U.S. monetary policy, according to Reuters.

Economists are predicting that new central bank governor Şahap Kavcıoğlu will cut interest rates this year even as inflation remains in double digits, according to a monthly central bank survey. Kavcıoğlu has said he will keep rates at above realised and expected inflation, without providing further details.

Erdoğan, who has sacked three central bank governors in less than three years, says high interest rates are inflationary, an unorthodox theory that has won sympathy from Kavcıoğlu, who had no experience in central banking before accepting the job.

Global inflation is also accelerating as countries emerge from the pandemic. That has pushed up U.S. bond yields, prompting investors to pull capital from more fragile emerging markets such as Turkey. Losses for the lira are increasing the cost of Turkey’s imports, fuelling inflation further.

The lira’s losses are being compounded by locals buying dollars ahead of large foreign currency debt repayments, Bloomberg reported, citing two traders who asked not to be named. Turkish companies are due to repay or roll over $6.9 billion of foreign currency loans in June, central bank data shows.

The lira, which has lost more than half its value since 2018, is also weakening during renewed political uncertainty. Opposition parties are calling for early elections after a mafia boss made allegations of underworld links against government officials including the interior minister. Erdoğan has responded, saying presidential and parliamentary elections will take place as planned in 2023.

International credit agency Standard & Poor’s was due to review Turkey’s junk ‘B+’ debt rating later on Friday. The market is pricing Turkey two notches below S&P’s rating in the debt swaps market, Reuters said.

Turkey’s lira extended a record low on Friday even after consumer price inflation slowed for the first time in eight months and the central bank pledged tight monetary policy.

The currency’s renewed weakness - it has hit successive all-time lows over the past week - reflects the doubts Turks feel over the economic outlook and the accuracy of inflation data. Foreign investors are also fleeing Turkish markets, pointing to political interference in monetary policy.

Just got back after a ten day working holiday (cleaning and paying bills)We were more than happy getting 12.70 at our change office on Thurs (our final rate) This was a big increase from the 7tl we received two yrs ago. So the painting work which had been completed,2yrs rates, insurances, bank/elec/su etc all paid with lira at over 12tl to £..Very Happy.
However do feel sorry for the Turkish people their shoestring budget constantly being stretched.

I need your suggestion
I have cavities and sometimes i feel tooth pain
Someone suggest me
Steel Bite Pro  (https://arcadiateethwhitening.blogspot.com/2021/12/is-steel-bite-pro-scam-or-legit.html)
She said it's best product for stopping tooth decay , cavities and other serious oral health issues( tooth whitening etc)
Should I use this product?

Or if you know any other better product or solution

Kindly guide me
