At the top of the page along with new poststhere used to be an active topics button which I really liked using
Is there any way to use this function with the new layout?

That's right and another useful one is under it - 'Show new replies to your posts' - neither exactly like active topics but will show you recent activity. I'll look for something more like active topics was because once you have read a post that was listed in "unread posts" it is not as easy to find...
