Title: Setting PC to UK When in Turkey
Post by: Colwyn on May 28, 2012, 15:18:31 PM
I believe there is an option available so you can set your PC to treat the UK as its location when in Turkey. I think this will allow you to use Google and other search engines in the same way as at home without proritising local Turkish returns first.

Can anyone help with this please?

I think you'll need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) like www. my private network, com, this gives you an UK IPN so BBC etc thinks you are in UK.

I'm not sure about settings for making the PC a UK machine but my wife and I use a Dell and a Mac and have Google tabs "https://www.google.co.uk/". This makes sure you get the UK search facility.

Your IP Address is a UK one even when in Turkey as Firo said if you want to get UKTV you would have to hide the IP as it would show as being in Turkey

I think the concern is that sites such as Google might take your being in Turkey (they know everything  ;) ) and direct you to google.com.tr rather than google.co.uk - I have not noticed this more than once or twice and I think they take the info from your computer settings (such as your selected language setting in control panel) rather than from the IP you are using. I might be wrong but I think that is the case normally.

If so, this means that although your IP is Turkey, your language of choice is English and your country Great Britain, so you should be directed to .co.uk over .com.tr

You can download a free version of Hotspot Shield at the link below. It doesnt give the fastest vpn connection but will provide a 1-3mb link. Worth trying out.

Best thing to do is get the google home page for UK then add it to your browsers favorites then every tme you want google uk click on your saved favorite one. Over here its always going to google.com.tr by default which is a pain!

This was exactly the problem and happened consistently returning not only Turkish websites first on the list but also doing so with Turkish language computer button labels - for News, Images and so on. I've now put Google UK on my bookmarks toolbar so will be OK as long as I remember. I still suspect there is a Tools option somewhere that allows you to turn off the geographical detection facility and remain with original (UK) identity - but I am not talking about UK TV here.
