Title: Alternative lawn
Post by: tribalelder on April 17, 2008, 13:19:17 PM
A long shot this..... but does anyone have any info on this alternative to grass which does not require mowing. English is mouse ear and is known and available in Turkey as Fare Kulagi Gim. Any information on when to sow and what soil is required and anything else would be useful.  I have done lots of searching on the web but apart from the odd mention have come up with zilch in terms of solid information.[?][?] :)

Ideally, you need to sow the seeds in early Spring. As long as the soil's been well raked it's not too important about the quality of it. It needs watering well when growing and throughout the summer. You can get the seed at most garden suppliers in Fethiye.

It DOES require mowing, but only 2 or 3 times a year.

It's a little more expensive than ordinary grass seed, but well worth it. Definitely not megabucks.

I originally made this query about a friends garden who had it done and in a nutshell it failed.  The garden company who installed it are now talking of removing it with the topsoil and redoing it with a sand base.
The cost here was treble mega bucks!   :)

there is a very small seed/bulb supply shop in the block that surrounds the fish/veg market that sells this seed [mouse ears]... i sent a turk friend in to ask the price...90 lira a kilo! [this was also marked on the box] sounds big bucks to me.

Fare Kulagi is indeed much more expensive than normal seed It can be bought in the mower shop beside Bim in Fethiye. It's 80ytl per kilo. Use 20 grams a Square metre/1 kilo for 50 metres. Now is a good time to plant. Ensure the ground is thourougly weeded and raked. Sow seed at the rate above and cover with a layer of either seived soil or blacking which can be bought in any of the agriculture shops for about 9ytl a bag. It will take about 5 bags for the 50 metres. Water daily and it should come through in about 2 weeks. No mowing is required but weeding is still necessary until it gets thick enough to cover the groung effectively.

Thanks for the info...this was how it was done originally and as stated it failed, hence the idea of changing to a sand base. :)

On the subject again of grass seed again... we have been quoted 30TL (£13?) per kg for new grass seed we need to replace/refurbish gardens at our complex which have completely dried up/died despite watering and feed fertilizer. This seemed quite high to me as Uk price for just economy grass seed is about £5  a Kg.  I just wanted to ask if anyone knows price of the kind of 'normal use' seed that you can buy in Turkey.  (Thankfully they are not quoting for the Fara Kulagi stuff that you were discussing).  It seems that our grass is originally built on a rubble concrete base and the top soil not as thick as perhaps it ought to be and maybe after 4 years the nutrients have just gone. The management company recommend new top soil and manure as well.

thank you

Hi Im a bit hazy but seem to remember paying around 20tl a kilo for normal seed from the nursery opposite Migros 2 years ago. That mostly failed so bought more seed from the shop by the fishmarket which cost 30tl a kilo but was slower growing and more hard wearing. Didnt have too much success with that either The ants seemed to be nicking it!! Now im living in another house but have given up on having a lawn, just strimmed the weeds down and got myself some hens! I may not have a nice green lawn but I do get nice free range eggs everyday  :)

Tribal Elder - we planted mouse ear grass in our garden - in the height of the summer, on soil that was topped with some manure/goat manure. It was kept well waterered when it was planted. It grew, and we still have it 3 years later. At the time, it was an experiment, and we did half the lawn mouse ear, half the lawn nowmal grass. I wish we had done the whole lawn on mouse ear - we find it much easier to maintain - the main weed being grass which has blown over from the other side of the garden!! A future project is to resow theother side withthe mouse ear. The cost doesn't sound that bad to me, as a kg would go a long way - we were given about 4oz and it did a sizeable area

Mouse Ear (Fahre Kulagi) is much cheaper this year. I paid 30TL for a 1/2 kilo in the lawnmower shop last week.
