Title: What is the best concert you have been to?
Post by: Stuart T on February 22, 2018, 19:56:14 PM
For me.....

Wings.

Hammersmith Odeon, September 1975.

I've been lucky enough to see some big bands and stars in concert; Michael Jackson, David Bowie; Elton John, BB King - even Gary Glitter but none comes close to the atmosphere and audience participation of the Wings concert.

Everybody in the audience was up and dancing and Paul McCartney was the definitive showman - it was like a private set.

Joy - just sheer joy.

A close second was Kings of Leon at Bellahouston Park here in Glasgow

Bill Haley and the Comets at Manchester in the mid 1950's.  The early years of Rock and Roll.  Those were the days!  We were bopping in the aisles that night and singing until we were hoarse but we were so, so happy.  Memories are made of this!   ;D

Queen, Glasgow Apollo, December 1979.  Thing was, it was so mind blowing, that every gig I’ve been to since them has seemed crap.

Travis – 02 Academy in Sheffield in December 2016.  The first concert we’ve been to when all four of us – me, my husband, son and daughter - all attended together.  We’ve all seen the band before but never all four of us together.  Our kids were brought up listening to Travis, obviously amongst others, and love the band like we do so it was great for us as a family to enjoy them together.  At the time our kids were 20 & 23 and were probably the youngest in the crowd (it's only a very small venue).  A lovely memory from that evening was watching our daughter on our son’s shoulders for the last few songs so, for me, that’s my favourite concert.

My second favourite was seeing Michael Jackson at Roundhay Park in Leeds in 1988.  He really could perform.

Elton John at De Montfort Hall in Leicester in 1972 or 73? It was the first concert I ever went to, but the best by far. I was only 3 rows from the front (everyone was sitting!) and he came on stage with what looked like 8 inch heals! By the end of the concert, everyone was on their feet and the atmosphere was electric.

Gasworks Choir, St Georges Hall, Bristol, 2017. [Hilary sings for them so I was obliged to give that answer. Otherwise it would have been Chuck Berry, Newcastle, 1966.]

Has to be Pink Floyd at Knebworth in the seventies. Incredible atmosphere and a cloudless sky.

I have thought long and hard about this before replying. I have been to numerous contenders at venues both big and small and have to say Simple Minds at Wembley Stadium takes it.

And I still can't make my mind up.  It depends what era we're talking about.  I can go back to 1963 and seeing The Beatles just as they had got to the top (and before they went a bit weird!).  Then 1966 and The Rolling Stones (same again!).  Both would come out top of lots of 'best of' lists'.
Have seen loads of top acts since then but to pick one out is proving a bit difficult.  I'll keep thinking   ;)

Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen at The Stoneground Manchester 1973. Quite like their Live album from Texas, worth a listen.

Three good concerts I attended were with tickets purchased on the day, I used to ring the Ticket Office on the morning.

I got front row for a Chuck Berry / Little Richard concert at Brums NEC Arena. Front row for a Hollies concert at Brums Symphony

Hall, and fifth row for a McCartney concert at Brums NIA.Macca's brother was four seats to my left and Sir George Martin was

directly behind me. Macca was brilliant. At the Chuck Berry show five seats to my right were empty and at the interval I saw

four relatives up in the stands, called them down and they spent the second half in the front row, centre stage.

I bought tickets from a free newspaper on the day and saw a good Wings show in Brum.  Well worth a few phone calls.     ;)

Live Aid 13 July 1985 -absolutley amazing, followed closely by Queen and Status Quo, St James Park - 9th July 1986.  Best special effects ever was Take That Circus Tour 2009.
