Title: Coconut Oil
Post by: nichola on April 21, 2014, 08:53:09 AM
Does anyone know if and where I can buy coconut oil. In the UK it's sold in packs like butter and is solidified.

Thanks   :)

I use coconut Cream all the time in my Thai food, but have never used coconut oil, although it is readily available in jars in Tesco.

We use coconut oil here in the uk for our Thai cooking. Quite expensive but does seem to last a while. Never used cream. Is that made from the milk?

You can buy coconut oil in jars in Boots or other chemists, it is sold until it gets warm then it goes runny.  Its not the same as coconut milk you put in curried.  Its very good for bringing out bruises and as a remedy for dry skin.  Used to use it as a suncream years ago.  Love the smell

After doing some research I have discovered that (of course) I want organic virgin coconut oil which I doubt very much if I can get here although I will try the best chemist in Fethiye before giving up.

Here are some of the many health benefits of coconut oil

I actually want it to try "mouth pulling"   ;)

I bought cold pressed coconut oil through Gittigidiyor last month. It is a 250 gr jar and costed 19.90 TL. Cargo was three or four lira.
I use it for oil pulling and results are amazing. I assume that the jar will last me several months so worth every penny. I'll try to find the suppliers link.

Taken from this article

http://www.dentistryiq.com/articles/2014/03/how-dental-professionals-can-respond-to-oil-pulling-patients.html

"There is no question that oil pulling lessens the bacterial load in the mouth. As we all know, the mouth is the gateway to the body. When you consider the fact that a clean mouth may have between 1,000 and 100,000 bacteria on each tooth, and those that do not have a clean mouth may have between 100 million and a billion bacteria on each tooth, surely oil pulling can’t hurt? I know the immune system would appreciate a little coconut oil as part of a regular routine. We all want to do what we can to function at the optimal level of health. So, why not oil pull as part of your daily routine? Other than taking a little extra time, what’s the downside? It’s certainly food for thought, pardon the pun!"

Thank you for the offer Sheila and tonyb - I might try Dutchie's recommendation first but would be interested to know Dutchie if there is anything on the packet to indicate if it is organic or virgin and is it definitely unrefined. I can't see that information via the link you posted.

Is there much in the way of a coconut taste? Is it quite subtle?

I too would be interested to know what difference it has made   :)

When I get home tonight, I'll check the label for you.
I had tried to order from another company first which claimed to have organic. That was 320 gram jar for 39 TL but they were out of stock.

I started doing it about a month ago. You should do it for about 20 minutes but the first days I was happy with 4 or 5 minutes.
You take a teaspoon of the oil and let it melt in your mouth. It has a strong coconut taste (and I don't like coconut so that was part of the problem in the beginning). The first seconds are horrible but after is has melted, it's not too bad. The coconut flavour also gets less after it has melted. You just move it around in your mouth for as long as possible.

After just a few days I noticed that my teeth had become more white. I used to have problems with my gums next to a certain tooth and that has cleared.

On the internet you can find a whole list of problems that it apparently cures but since I don't suffer with my health, I haven't noticed any difference. Just whiter teeth and no more infected gums.

I must admit that I haven't done it for the last week or so because it is a bit time consuming. I was doing it in the morning and since I've started working again, it was hard enough to get things organised in the morning without the oil pulling. The hardest part is not being able to answer my 4 year old when she's chatting away in the morning and asking loads of questions  :-X

By the way, I can do about 15 minutes at the moment and then I have to spit it out because of having too much saliva. If you do it less than 20 minutes, you should start again until you have reached it but I haven't bothered with that.

I definitely recommend it and will check the label tonight and let you know.

On the Balen website it's listed under organic products.
You can't go very wrong for 24 TL.

I'm quite excited by this, I have to try it. I hope this one below is ok, it had huge amount of good reviews.  There's a lot of reading on line about it's (oil pulling )merits. Apparently you can use any oil, sesame oil and ghee is also recommended as some of the first used in India where they have done this for years. Fascinating.

After hours of research this web site is useful in understanding the different types of coconut oil out there.

http://coconutoil.com/what-type-of-coconut-oil-is-best-how-to-choose-a-coconut-oil/

What I found interesting is that many sellers do not state in more product information more clearly if at all the sort of information required to make an informed decision; apart from this one at a reasonable price and free delivery.

Well I have just had my first 'pulling' experience, 20 minutes is a very long time to have COCONUT OIL in your mouth! I have to say I almost bawked after just a couple of minutes. I persevered though. It's not very pleasant and your mouth creates it's own natural saliva making it even more to hold and not swallow! (I just had to edit here as it was sounding a bit smutty). This is coconut oil pulling I'm describing. The bright side for your partner is that you can't speak for all that time! However much fun it is for them to try and make you!   ;)

Well you know they always say you get used to something with practise, Lotty.

Do let us know how you go on. You should maybe take a snap of your gnashers now and again in a couple of weeks/month so that you can compare (you don't have to show us).

My Mum has a tendency to suffer with mouth ulcers a couple of times a year and I have heard coconut oil mouth pulling, because of the antiseptic quality of the oil, can work really well in preventing these.

If nothing else, Lotty, you will have the cleanest, oiliest, nuttiest-flavour gob in your neck of the woods.  :D

Not sure if it is the same but I have been buying pure coconut which if left out of the fridge in the warm weather turns into oil When it is solid just put a small piece in your hand and within seconds it will become liquid which I use as a face cream but it is fantastic for many other things . Dry skin especially .I have been buying this for years from the Sister's Place in Fethiye fish market at 10 lira for a small jar. Bet he will have sold out by the time I go for my next lot !!!!!! Perhaps I should not have posted this .

I was going to pop to Sisters Place last night to pick up a bottle but by coincidence my order from Gittigidiyor was already waiting for me at the restaurant.

Last night I used it as my face cream which felt really nice and absorbed easily and this morning I had my first attempt at mouth pulling.

After the initial feeling of revulsion at putting just a flat teaspoon amount of solidified oil in my mouth it went surprisingly well. I took a small bowl with me just in case I felt the need to urgently expel and went back to bed and read my book while swishing it around my mouth and through my teeth. I had already decided that 5-10 minutes would be enough having conveniently read that somewhere but I actually managed twenty minutes quite easily. The taste was not so unpleasant and the texture ok as soon as it had melted which was almost immediately.

Using just a small amount is key as it does generate quite a lot of saliva but that was more than manageable and it was very cloudy when I eventually spat it out, full of millions of bacteria and germs.

I usually have a fresh fruit milk shake in the mornings so I'm going to add a small amount into the mix as I don't really like meals made with coconut and there are lots of health benefits from consuming it too.

Title: Re: Coconut Oil
Post by: Lotty on April 29, 2014, 11:08:36 AM
I read on google that a rounded dessert spoon or even a tablespoon was the amount, which actually makes it a lot in your mouth. I've done it again and it was easier this time as I was concentrating on doing something else in the twenty minutes of pulling. I had my bath and all that stuff. I will try next with just a teaspoon. It makes sense if just swishing around the mouth and it'll last a lot longer too! I have green health drinks but I already add coconut water in mine. My daughter uses the oil on her skin and psoriasis areas. It's very soothing. You can cook/fry with it too I've not tried it but it's supposed to be delicious.   :)
Title: Re: Coconut Oil
Post by: nichola on April 29, 2014, 11:36:09 AM
Lotty most sites I read said a teaspoon for pulling but to eat up to a tablespoon a day, working up from a teaspoon as it's a lot for the body to deal with to start with. I'm not sure I'll go that far but a little a day will be plenty I'm sure.

How does your daughter find it for psoriasis as I read that it was good for this but not how effective.

Nichola  I have a friend with psoriasis and she uses Manuka honey which she finds extremely good  but can imagine that coconut oil would be well worth trying . I had a sore spot on my leg from where it got scratched on a rose bush and I used the coconut  on that and it worked fine .The more you read about its benefits it really is a very versatile substance.

Nichola, my daughters complaint is on her head, I don't think it's actually psoriasis, just a similar long term skin problem but she finds coconut oil (in a tube?) relieves the irritation. She can only do that at night really or she'd have to go out looking like she'd dipped her head in a chip pan! It seems like an amazing product, a veritable panacea! ;D

Is anyone still mouth pulling with coconut oil?

I have been doing it religiously every morning now for almost three months and am pleased with the results. I am sure my teeth are whiter and I barely notice that I am doing it now it has become so routine.

I add some every day to my fresh fruit shake but haven't particularly noticed any benefits to the size of my abdomen. I still get asked about three times a week if I'm pregnant, which I am not! As you will see from the photo I have always had a belly and I doubt if that is ever going to change    ;)

Hi Nichola yes I am Still pulling!  I have been since this thread first started and previously used tooth whitener from my dentist, but have not used it since using the oil and it seems to be maintaining the same shade! Perhaps you should be doing it for longer periods then you wouldn't be able to put food into your mouth, the only way I know of to loose that tummy wobble!  ;D ;D ;D :o

Yes I'm still pulling too, but not every day. I also only use a heaped tsp rather than tbspn. I'm sure it's enough. The best time for me to do it is when I do the crossword in the morning! I just don't think about it and the time goes quickly. I don't know about whitening, but I just like feeling that I'm doing myself some good by getting rid of all the invisible mouth bacteria. I don't cook with it but I use Rape Seed Oil which is also highly recommended as a very healthy option. Google it.   ;)

I always thought I was allergic to rapeseed because I first started hay fever while having to drive past fields of the stuff every day going to college. I was wary of trying the oil but I've had no problems. It tastes lovely, gives food a gorgeous golden crunch when frying, plus it's a healthier option to Olive oil and really good for you.
Title: Re: Coconut Oil
Post by: nichola on July 07, 2014, 13:26:20 PM
Canola oil - rape seed oil - is only good for you provided that it has not been hydrogenated; done to increase its stability.

Same goes for any oils that have been hydrogenated. It increased the presence of trans fats which in turn increases bad cholesterol and reduces good cholesterol; increases the risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes.

Unfortunately hydrogenated oils are found it lots of other products including processed (fast) foods, margarine, biscuits, white bread, non dairy cream and cakes because it increases the shelf life of the product.

Well I have to say most if the stuff I've read about this is positive. I always used Olive oil but now we find this is tastier and seems to have many benefits benefits. See below.  :D

What are the health benefits of Rapeseed Oil?

Contains the lowest saturated fat content of any oil - less than half that of Olive Oil.
Has 10 times more Omega 3 than Olive Oil.
It is a good source of Vitamin E.
High in monounsaturated fats.
Contains no artificial preservatives and is trans-fat and GM free.
It is suitable for a variety of diets – vegetarian, gluten-free, Kosher and Halal.
It is safe to cook at high temperatures with a burning point of 230c much higher than Olive Oil.
