Title: Xanthos
Post by: jo b on September 11, 2006, 14:28:13 PM
We are bringing friends out to Fethiye on 22nd of this month...the husband doesn't like lying in the sun. So we are hiring a car and need a few day trips planned -Saklikent is an obvious one and as previously covered seems quite enjoyable without a guide but what about Xanthos? Do you think we will miss the essence of the place without a guide? Perhaps a good guide book will suffice?
Any other ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Jo.

Xanthos is great to do on your own, we went in May - very quiet! Get a decent guide book before you go there aren't any available there, in May there was only a guy collecting entrace money. Also recommend decent shoes it's a huge mountainous place, quite rocky under foot and takes ages to get around. Would recommend Tlos and Patara beach as well not to far away and worth a visit. For futher afield Ephusus is a must! However you may want to consider a organised trip for this one - it's quite a drive!

Kaya village is well worth a visit and from accounts on here has some really good restuarants.

Lunch at one of the fish restaurants in Oren with the fast flowing river as a backdrop. Magnificent.

You could drive to Dalyan, get a co-operative boat to Kaunos and Dalyan beach.  It's a great day out and we thoroughly enjoyed the day.

You could also go to Antalya.  Don't go the coastal route unless you want to enjoy the view because it takes forever!  Perhaps that's another trip?

You'll be lucky to get round Xanthos without a guide! We were the only ones there when we visited and a young lad stuck to us like a limpet, directing us around the site, and then demanded a fortune for his services - so we ended up paying him half a fortune.

Stuart

It should be renamed the stuff we stole museum.

We were in Cairo museum in May and the first thing the guide showed us was the Rosetta Stone.  This stone is the key to the hyrogliphics.
The one in Cairo is a copy and the original is in the British Museum.

I don't think we have the right to take treasures from another country.
