Title: casa di mama
Post by: laffa on September 11, 2014, 11:30:30 AM
For the first time ever I have been disappointed with them, I ordered plain steak with onion and tomato, the steak looked like it had been prepared earlier, ready to be covered in a sauce, it was cold and dry, and the potatoes were just dolloped on, and the mixed meze was no better, full of grease,

That's disapointing :(
Did you bring it to the waiters attention?

No. I never, simply because I couldn't be bothered waiting and then having to eat while everyone else had finished, it just holds everyone else up, if it had  been covered in pepper sauce or similar I probably wouldn't have noticed, apart from the texture,  :(

For the first time ever we had a bad meal in there last week, told the waiter that the Planka wasn't very nice, that was it no excuses or offer of another
Sorry Murat won't be back

We were there on Wed too. Garlic bread came up Cold and pasta was a little gloppy and looked reheated and salad didn't look very fresh! First time I have experience this! Any reason? Lack of kitchen staff maybe? All tasted fine but just didn't seem up to normal standards. :( I love this restaurant and we use it a lot when we are over! Maybe just a bad night?

4 of us went there last nights and we have no complaints at all.
I asked for a 14oz fillet, rare, with chips, fried onions and mushrooms, and nothing else and that is what I got.
another case of hot and cold methinks

Please don't  let this be another 'trial by calis beach forum'
Rather than telegraph the one bad meal you had.... why don't  you write about the places you recommend.. this would be much better.
These are real people  with families  to feed.... Their businesses  can be severely damaged by your thoughtless remarks.
I for one have always had superb food served at this restaurant.
Try letting the staff know next time.. they will appreciate your honesty face to face I'm  sure!!

I very rarely recommend any restaurants, there is a weakness of inconsistency amongst them and all you can do is go to the one which is most consistent, Ive eaten at Casa di Mama twice this year, first time was
Decidedly average and second time was lovely.  :)

In Aberdeenshire at a very well thought of hotel I had sirlion steak (sorry Jacqui  :) ) - when it arrived it was two pieces (roughly making up the size of a 'normal' size sirloin. One was sensational, the other pretty tough and not that nice at all.

Forget inconsistencies in restaurants, it's inconsistencies within one meal that concerns me  ;)

What is this Trial by Calis Beach Forum ?? that's a big statement coming from a newbie, most of the comments on this thread are from hardened Calis Beach lovers, I always give my opinions truthfully and as a matter of fact have been going into this establishment since the day it opened and know Murat and some of the staff from their previous place of employment.

I hadn't seen that post at all till you just posted Ron

And their businesses can be seriously boosted by Calis Beach Forum if they do it right. Having families to feed is irrelevant. Do it right and the family can eat all they like. If the standard is poor having a family to feed not the customer's problem.

Why are the comments "thoughtless remarks" I would far rather know upfront what people think of a restaurant ok each to their own opinion in life..
I could not believe the slanging match that went on on facebook yesterday and today all because one lady posted her review/opinion of a certain fish restaurant honestly it became comepletely ridiculous you would have thought she was the owner herself...

Like I said to someone yesterday Karen, if you think CBF is aggressive/rude/insensitive you really should try the local Facebook groups - horrific and ruthless at times, like a bear pit and certainly no prisoners taken. They make me wonder if CBF is perhaps just too tame :D

I have never had a bad meal in Casa Di Mama, but if I did I would say so - just like I do when I have a good one - that is what CBF is all about, sharing info and experiences. If they serve me substandard food I don't care how many children they have to support.

It's hardly a trial by the forum, I made a fair comment and stand by it, I too have been going here since it opened and have had a few "average", meals, and feel the quality is slipping hence my post,
I certainly don't want to be accused of starting a trial, its a bloody steak, not Oscar Pistorius, some whoppas saying they have families to feed, don't we all,  and by the way, they still got a good tip.

Did you complain to him after you had finished or at the beginning when you had taken the first few bites?

Just shows the inconsistency, last week my wife had a large fillet, asked for it to be cut thick and she reckons it was the best she has had.It only cost about £8 that was with home made chips a large side salad and. Peppercorn sauce on the side

Just a thought perhaps in an Italian Restaurant we should be ordering Italian dishes.    I have tried the pasta al pollo and the carbonara and they have both been really good.  As is the garlic bread.

Quite right Jaqui, if you want steak go to somewhere that specialises in it. "Meeting Point" comes immediately to mind.Never had a bad steak in here.  ;)

I've eaten at Casa di Mamas on 2 occassions, both times have ordered pasta dishes; the first was utterly inedible, the 2nd, when I was with friends, not much better (I think the chef de ping needed extra training on the use of a microwave). Yes, I complained both times, the first time it was taken off the bill, the 2nd we all got a shrug of the shoulders.

Sorry, but won't be going back

Seems like it is a case of inconsistency , I was thinking that just the steaks are hit and miss, then someone posts on a bad pasta dish, so sounds more like pot luck, and I would never recommend anywhere on their garlic bread, surely thats one thing you can't mess up on.  :) or is it.

Laffa, the garlic bread is not really like the bread we have in the U.K.  It comes in a circle shape and looks a bit like a flat pizza and is pre-cut into portions.  However, I was not just recommending the place on the garlic bread, just saying it is good.
I am not about to get involved in an argument about steak.  I think people order and eat what they want and so they should as it's their holiday.  However, about 95% of the recommendations and complaints on restaurant food, be it a Chinese, Indian, Italian or Turkish on this Forum is always concerning steak.  It would really be nice to hear about other restaurant food, because, personally, I don't want to order steak in Turkey as I can get the best steak here in Scotland, but I would really value opinions on other dishes which would be so helpful for me and perhaps other members in deciding on a restaurant. I am sure a lot of holiday makers who eat out in Calis do not want to order steak every night.   Perhaps a new thread on members favourite Calis meals (apart from steak) and where to order them would be good.     ;) ;D

Jacqui, I would respectfully disagree with you on this. A restaurant may specialise on a certain cuisine but I expect every item on their menu to be of a good standard, otherwise they shouldn't be offering it!

I am aware how the garlic bread is served Jacqui, as stated above ,I have been going here since it opened too, my point is, it looked very much like "and here's one I made earlier", as far as my steak was concerned, my company wanted Italian dishes, I never, but still expected to have a meal which was of some quality, not something you need to wrap up and give to the cats and dogs,  it's your choice if you only eat steak in Scotland, that would be like me not having a jam butty in Turkey, I would,    ;)

Steak is something that can be ordered anywhere and the quality, IMO depends on where your are in the world.
Turkey is not renown for it's Steak, it is only a dish that has been introduced for the Brits who demand it. Most of the steak in Turkey is imported, lots from Germany and Poland.  Some is produced in Turkey from cattle kept in sheds.  Once you have an Aberdeen Angus steak in Scotland, there is nothing to compare to it.

Perhaps you try Kobe beef from Japan or a trip to Argentina in the comparison stakes .   :)

We ate in casa Di mama in August and have to say not the best. The garlic bread we were served was nothing like Jacqui describes, it more resembled a sliced loaf with a bit of garlic butter on the top. The main course was "OK" nothing special but nothing we could actually complain about. We also ate at Bella Mammas, again not great. Enough said for the next 8 days we dined away from the front and enjoyed every meal. Maybe some places with that " great" reputation get slightly complacent? As they say each to their own.

Had a meal here in August. Was one of the best meals we had all holiday. 4 adults and 4 kids all had starters and mains, not one complaint between us. I had the calzone, it was fantastic and plenty of it.
