Definitely NOT an innocent mistake. He's an experienced diver and has dived at various locations around the world. He knows the rules. This time he got caught. No sympathy for him.
-
Thanks KKOB - I hadn't read about that he is an experienced diver.
In which case I would tend to agree with you.
(PS Did I really just say that ;))
-
If it was him that found the coins and not his children then it would look like he's trying to cover himself, if he has dived around the world then yes he knows the rules so I agree no sympathy. PS it's nice to see you two bonding

It must be the after effects of the group hug from the other day.......

Lovely to see Highlander and KKOB bonding. A small group hug needed. :)

I'm not into threesomes.
Back on topic please. :)

From what I read he is an ambulance driver who does snorkelling as a hobby. I am wondering what I would have done if I had found old coins anywhere in Turkey. I really have no idea what the correct procedure is if you find a few coins. I think if it was something like a vase or a statue I would have gone to the police but not sure if it was a few old coins. I hope he is not held in Turkey for too long.

Why - I would have thought the chances of finding coins was far greater and their historical value would be worthy in their own right. :)

As I understand it they were in his luggage so what does it matter who found them.
-
He couldn't find ancient coins in most countries and expect to be able to leave the country with them - including if he'd found them in the UK.
-
I know people who have had beach stones confiscated at Dalaman Airport.
-
Must be good xray machines they are using now

Yes us for starters :(

As usual, the tabloids presenting the story in an anti Turkish light, mentioning the guy is an ambulance driver to garner sympathy for him. If a Turk had come to England and was caught in a similar position, I wonder what the papers would say then?
-
Yes three years ago my grandson had pebbles confiscated at Dalaman Airport which they picked up on the scanner. They warned him that it was against the law to take anything like that out of the country, they even asked for his passport which they returned within 5 mins, we wonder whether they made a note for future reference if it were to happen again, not that it would after that.
-
I know people really, really miss Turkey when they are back in the UK, but smuggling it home, bit by bit, in your suitcases is overdoing things a little.

What I was getting at was, did he think he might get away lighter if he put the blame on innocent children, maybe just a telling off and confiscation instead of jail.
