Police can seize any amount over 1 thousand pounds if you can not give a good reason carrying it.

HMRC officers will not detain properly declared cash if they have no reason to doubt its legitimacy. However, as with cash in amounts of £1000 or more found at any place within the UK, under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA), it may be seized if an officer has reasonable grounds to suspect it is either the proceeds of, or is intended for use in, unlawful conduct.

It's best to tell them it is the proceeds of unlawful conduct and intended for use in unlawful conduct, that should really throw them :D

You can take as many children as you like as long as they have legitimate passports.   :D:D

According to the HM revenue & Customs website, that from 15 June 2007, if you are travelling to or from a country outside the European Union (EU), you will need to declare any sums of cash of 10,000 Euro or more (or the equivalent in another currency) to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

You do not need to declare cash if you are travelling to or from another EU country.

But in all cases, Graham's post is still relevant. Not needing to declare and not having it seized aren't related topics.
