Lira Notes
« on: July 30, 2009, 23:01:44 PM »
In preparation for our trip out in October I popped into Intercash to start building a fund and actually got 2.32 to the poundwhich was better than last October. When I got home a put them with some lira I had left over from last year, didn't bother changing them as the exchange rate was rubbish, anyway the new notes are a lot smaller, are shops etc still taking the old notes or am I left with some £150 of worthless bank notes?

No your notes are still valid, I wouldnt change any more till you get there as the rate is normally better in Turkey.
I think the old notes are good until Jan 1st.

Here's something I posted on another forum about Turkish banknotes:

As of 31st December 2009 the New Turkish Lira / Yeni Turk Lirasi notes will cease to be legal tender and ONLY Turk Lirasi / Turkish Lira notes will be accepted in commercial outlets.

New Turkish Lira / Yeni Turk Lirasi notes will only be accepted by state banks.

If you're holidaying in Turkey this year and you have banknotes left-over at the end of your holiday and intend saving them to use next year, make sure you only keep hold of Turkish Lira / Turk Lirasi notes. Unless you want the hassle of taking them to a state-owned bank, they're pretty much going to be worthless to you.

To make it simple........get rid of any banknotes that have the word "YENI" on them.

Thanks for the explanations, I'll make sure SWMBO spends the old notes first.

I have a One Million Lira note in a frame at our place, it does give me that smug self satisfied feeling of being a millionaire.  Even when I'm not!  Well it works for me!!

Before the million notes became obsolete, I collected in all the ones in best condition and double laminated them - they made wonderful bookmarks.
