£50 million for a player that has spent most of his time injured for 2 and a half seasons, haha i'd say Pool got the best deal, especially as they have Suarez and Carroll, both are younger and hungrier!

1996 Alan Shearer to Newcastle = £ 15m (5 % per annum inflation to 2011 = £ 31m)

2011 Andy Carroll transfer to Liverpool = £ 30m.

Methinks the barmy money is sign of desperation at two clubs who are trying to stop a slide ... mind you I wouldn't have minded a third of that money being spent by Venger on a half decent centre half, which could be the difference between winning the Prem. or being the runner up

I bet Alex Ferguson is laughing his socks off at £35m for Carrol, bearing on mind Hernadez cost 7m ...... how much is he worth now ?

Shearer was also 26 at the time of the move you mention, Carroll 22. That could mean that Newcastle bought a more proven striker, or that Liverpool have a player with a larger number of years ahead of him - take your pick  :)
