I've had a privilege of working with lots of older people over the years and some of their sayings are priceless. Here are a few of my favourites: -
* It'll not always be dark at seven (better days will come)
* There's them that'll work and them that'll let 'em (this was a saying my late Grandma used about the work shy)
* He's not as big as 'apeth of copper (referring to someone small)
* They must think folks are people (they must think we are daft)
* The sights you see when you haven't got your gun (look at the state of that)
* Look at the state of that and the price of meat (again, look at the state of that)
* Don't let that sun fool you (when the sun shines before May and you're tempted to wear summer clothes)
* Don't waste a ship for 'apeth of tar (if a job's worth doing then it's worth doing right)
* You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink (you can do your best to help someone but it's ultimately up to them)
* If you ever do "owt for nowt, do it for thissen" (translation from Yorkshire dialect: "If you ever do anything for nothing, do if for yourself"
* It's a bit dark over Bill's mother's (the sky looks a bit dark in the distance/it looks like it's going to rain)
* God's good (what goes around, comes around)
* When robin's are here, loved ones are near (robins represent loved ones no longer with us)
These are just a selection that come to mind but I'd love to hear yours.
