Title: The Move..
Post by: BernieTeyze on October 08, 2013, 20:29:06 PM

Looking at different ways to get our shizz over. Was thinking parcelstogo.com, for clothes and bedding. They seem pretty reasonable/reliable.
Then for the rest jet2 23kg x 3 bags each plus 10kg hand luggage. There will be either 4 or 6 of us couriering it over!

Also thinking you need residency before you can get post office box thingy, so might have to take a while to retrieve my stuff..or is there another way?

We have to get residency within 90 days, but within 30 days to register a phone..with your residency?

Sorry folks, think i,m even confusing myself now.
Bernie

So you have to have a residency permit to register your phone. Is that what you are saying, Bernie? And that really you need to register your phone within 30 days of arriving? What about buying a cheap Turkish phone once over there and just transferring your numbers.

I'm not sure how long the residency permits take to come through, so applying well within the 90 day visa allowance time is presumably advisable.

Yes, think you are right on both counts.

It is not necessary to hold a Resident's Permit to register a foreign mobile phone.  However, you must register it within a month of entry.  To do this, go to the Tax Office with your phone and passport showing your date of entry.  You pay 115 tl and will be issued with a receipt.  Take your receipt to a Turkcell shop, or one of the other providers, where you purchase a SIM card and have the phone registered in your name,

Mobile phones are much more expensive in Turkey than the UK.  I bought a cheap Nokia from Carphone Warehouse, £44 and because I hadn't updated my phone in the last six months got £25 off it.  The same phone here in Kipa was over 300 lira.  Luckily, it was registered just before the charges came in but even paying the tax would still have saved around 50%.

iPhones and other smart phones are mega expensive here.  If you are moving from the UK and already have one of these it would be well worth paying the tax.

Thank you, Marggie for this information.

Menthol, if you want to use your own UK phone but want a turkish sim for cheap calls/internet, you have to register your phone or it gets blocked.  You can sometimes get away with it for a week or so but usually gets blocked in that time.  It will still work at home with your own sim when you return - or at least mine did.

Thanks, I not long had an upgrade, so I would like to keep my galaxy ace. So how much will it cost to keep it?

So if I dont put in a Turkish sim, I dont need to register my phone.

However, if I dont put in a Turkish sim, and carry on using my phone with my usual UK sim, my calls/texts costs will bankrupt me.

Sounds as though registering it, despite it costing £40 or so, will be the best option for me. Then again, my phone is getting old (I've given my last 2 upgrades to my son because I just couldn't be arsed spending an entire day setting up my new phone) and I never use the data access on it. So for me it might be better to just buy a Turkish one with sim.

Oh, I don't know.
