Bring back the cane!

"It never did me any harm & I feel sure there are many on here that will agree"

Agreed, but it didn't do me any good either, just made me resentful and improved my attitude
to school and teachers not one jot, but I wore the badge of honour with pride, so, some consolation there.
Mind you, the ruler round the back of the bare legs, the blackboard rubber winging its way to my head or the constant painful tug of the right ear as a means to lift me out of my chair didn't do me any harm either but it did instill a hatred of authority which I am proud to say I carry to this day. Sadistic teachers, oh yes, for sure.
I don't thrash children with sticks so why on earth should I allow someone else too.
:(:(:(

Did your classroom antics disrupt the lessons so that the less able were unable to get a decent education then ?

Irrelevant question, as the legalized brutality made no difference one way or another. 8)

On the contrary, I found that short sharp punishment kept the class in order and this allowed lessons to proceed. Pupils who were allowed to disrupt the development of those who wanted to learn were a menace to those whom they 'jokingly' called friends.

On the contrary, I was forced to learn the whole of Matthew Chapter three " In those days came John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea" because I feinted in the dinner queue, It neither stopped me feinting or made me a christian, a rather pointless exercise at the hand of a very sadistic teacher, as irrelevant to me as caning was.

I don't think the cane should be brought back, beating a child doesn't make it learn I think it probably teaches them it's ok to give someone a hiding. :(

"A woman, a dog and a walnut tree
The more you beat them the better they be"

(English Proverb, 16th century)

I wonder how many would agree with one or more of these.

Ah. but you have to be cruel to be kind. And a good hiding never hurt any child tree.

I do remember Mike A stating "a little violence never hurt anyone"
