Not since the incident free drive down to the airport no Ian :D

I rang my mechanic friend to ask what it might be and he said "s*** in the carburettor". That didn't help either!

The first test drive I took after I past my test was in a Nova. After two or three miles Brenda noticed a peculiar smell which I put done to the farm land we were passing at the time. However after five miles I was forced to call in to a friends who promptly told me that I had indeed left the hand brake on :o

Is it a diesel - I have a diesel and lost power on the motorway some weeks ago and the mechanic put something called fuel cleaner (I am not very technical) and it runs like a dream now!

It is indeed Ian, I must get myself a bag/canister/bottle/jar/yard of this mythical "fuel cleaner" that you suggest.

I have a light that is on in my car. A sign something is up thought this female.
Took it to Kwikfit and they diagnosed and said they couldn,t find anything can't remember what they charged bu advice was to go to a ford garage.
Right away I thought "that will cost me" so went to little garage that I can trust.
Charged me nothing, couldn't find a problem and made the light go away.  if it came back I had to go to ford.
It came back.  Ford charged me £50 to "diagnose" that there was nothing showing and made light go away.
I hate garages.

Diesel particulate filter? Are you using the car just for fairly short runs ?

Going by the info so far, at a guess you have a Renualt Espace or some other form of foreign people carrier - it could have been the ECU threw a wobbly and it went into "Limp home mode" then when the garage had put their diagnostic gear on to it the glitch was reset. Strange that you did not get a warning light.

Failing that it could have been the floor mat had crept below the accelerator...................

I think you probably have it Jim with ECU wobbly - but no warning light at all. Not sure on the filter Frank but yes I do short runs and a long run for me these days is like today's - a trip to Edinburgh of about 40 miles each way.

Is it a Renault Megane ?
There are coil things on them that need to be replaced at £40 a
time.  That can make it run odd and break your heart when you have to part with the cash
I found that if some were faulty they made car run odd, others going and the car wouldn't start.
