Title: The "Hollywood" names given to children will they stand the test of time?
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on August 31, 2013, 11:59:34 AM
Seems that today a lot of children are given names by their parents that are "unusual" to say the least.
Where we live, is an area from the Hollywood type names the latest I have heard of including Halo and Angel, (they are cousins) J.J. Maylia, Dior, Rio, Lulu,Yallissa, was surprised to see Esme as I know it's an old name, but am told it's after a character in the Twilight Films.  To carry on the latest two I just hear of are brother and sister.  He is Pirelli she is Mahiki Bow.
I wonder will some of these children be tempted to change there names when they get older or will these name become the norm??
Can anyone top these names?

There's a big trend, especially in East London, to make one name out of parts of two others.

Susan + Jennifer = Sufer
Tulisa + Rhianan = Tunan
Olivia + Beatrix = Olivtrix

I think Pirelli and Mahiki Bow may have a hard time when they grown up... Perhaps Pirelli will get a job in Kwik Fit.  but no hope for Mahiki Bow.

My Mum had a waitress working for her who left to have a baby... She came round to see us with her new son called "Roman"  I said "oh that's an unusual name" turns out that she had named him after "Roman Keating"   we didn't have the heart to tell her...

Each to their own I suppose, but our kids have said that if we had given them "silly made-up names" then they would have changed them as soon as they could.    There's a little lad local to us who is called J-Z and that is how they spell it but they pronounce it Jay-Zee.  Also, there's a little girl called Beyonce(!) but in a strong Barnsley accent it just sounds ridiculous - more Beyoncy than Beyonce!!

I told expectant Hilary that if it was a boy I wanted to call him Caradog Cadwaladr. She said she was only going to have girls. And so she did.

I also worked with a guy who had the same surname as the tennis player, Gustavo Kuerten.

No word of a lie, we were all a bit surprised when he christened his daughter, Annette.

Mercury, that one made me laugh out loud.
My daughter was told by a lady that owns a baby clothes shop in Kirkcaldy that she gets a lot of gypsies in. One woman came in with a baby in a pram and two small girls.  When the woman shop owner asked the new baby's name she was told it was Neo and what is your name she said to one little girl.  Beyonce she said, so she could not resist it she asked the little girl and her name was Shakira....

However, remember my Mother was Manager in the Bad Debt Department of a large furntiure shop in Liverpool two of her clients where Enoch Tarts and Aphelia Tickle.  In fact, my Mother brought a letter home from Aphelia Tickle saying she would not pay for her piece of furniture has she had sawdust in her drawers all the time...

I've known some kids with unfortunate initials, Wendy Chappell & Victoria Dugdale (the latter I confess is my God daughter), but probably the worst was the Carter family who named their poor kid Orson 'cos they were huge fans of Orson Wells!

My mates hubby wanted to call their son Obediah. She swiftly pointed out that it would be shortened to Obie. What's wrong with that he asked, she said nothing, except his surname is Wild.

I used to work for the National Coal Board many years ago and had the unfortunate job of paying redundancy monies to miners, steelworkers and shipbuilders.

I paid a Mr Tittensore and an Oliver Unt who never joined up his 'O' when he signed his name.

Then there were the Micock brothers, Alec and Aaron. Swear on the Quran, mi'Lord.

I recently became aware of a little brother and sister duo near me called Nike and Levi.

A young pregnant lady I used to work with toyed quite seriously with the idea of calling her unborn little girl Chlamydia as it 'sounded Greek'. She called her Elizabeth in the end.

The coolest real name of a person I have known was my ex-colleague, a wonderful guy called Richard Duck, yes Dick Duck etc... (he confidently told us, early on his first day he'd heard all the jokes, by 5pm he wearily admitted he hadn't). He was truly blessed, as one of the usual comments he had to endure was "Have you got webbed feet?".

Hilarious.

I swear to you, he used to say nothing in reply, take a shoe and sock off and incredibly, Mr. Richard Duck does have webbed toes :D

HA HA! There was a tendency in the Philippines to name their childrew using "western" names but they often got it wrong hence my lead engineer when I worked for BT in the Middle East --- "Harmold" Carlos  :)

I really feel sorry for the Kids who have to go at least go through life with these ridiculous names until they can change them by deed poll. It is very easy not to think it through, mys sister was Named Carole Ann, nothing wrong with that? ahh Carole Ann Taylor ----C.A.T., when my brother came along they chose initially Rodney Alan Taylor ----hastily changed to Rodney Lester!

Sigh, I ended up just plain old Omar Jedward McChonicie  :)
