my wife and I are thinking about going to calis beach next year for 4 weeks we have not been for about 12 years just wondering the cost of drinks and in general food. thanks in advance jim
-
We paid on average 7 for a large Efes (less than £2 at exchange rate) and 10 for an Efes Malt - although some places were more because they were more expensive restaurants. Not sure on spirit prices, by the time I get on to them I don't much care how much they cost :D
-
About 10 for a G&T I think.
-
Love Calis and never think about what the food and drink costs. I do know it is miles cheaper and miles better eating out in Calis than in the U.K. I mean 19 lira for a three course Sunday lunch in Vojo's... what is not to like.
-
Hope this does not start a long thread about beer prices ;D

The feeling of being too full! Have never managed three courses, rarely eat two, just order one desert with two spoons and share! :P

We paid £ 21.00 for 2 courses with one white wine and one fresh orange and lemonade in Beauly yesterday.
Food and service (restaurant was full) were excellent.
So hardly miles cheaper in Calis, Jacqui.
If memory serves a main course in the excellent Vojo's ranges in price from 20 - 30 with a steak around 38 lira. Prices which are similar to other establishments.
-
We had a fab meal at Mancero with staters, main courses, desserts for the kids, a couple of wines, beers and soft drinks. Being of expensive reputation I wasn't keen to see the bill. When it came it was the equivalent of £53! Where else an you get such good food in such a setting with great service...for around £13 each!

Sadler, just to let you know the three courses are inclusive of the 19 lira. but, you don't have to eat them all and you don't have to share a dessert with two spoons. However, I am pointing out how cheap it is to eat out whether you want the whole three courses is optional, but you pay the same price whatever you eat.
H, We usually find it around £30.00 for a meal in Calis for the two of us with drinks. This is miles cheaper that going out for dinner in our neck of the woods in Scotland. Of course, there are exceptions to any rule but generally, Calis and Fethiye are cheaper for us that the U.K.
-
One of the great things about the area is the value for money on food - you can eat cheaply and extremely well (lokantas, Frank Cannons etc) and you can eat expensively at a cheaper price (Mancero etc) - and at all points in between. There's nothing I like more than visiting the glass cabinet in Sahil Lokantasi and getting the full description of all different meals - then choosing one.
-
Jacqui, I am aware of the offers at Vojos and have tried several of their offerings. I am equally aware that a fixed price is the same, no matter if the whole offer is taken up or not. Also I am aware that a dessert needn't be shared. However, The eat all you can for cheap as chips offers do not rock my boat, as good a value as they may be. The reason I enjoy the sampler meals at Mozaic Garden with Nichola and Dugan is because I can dabble un peu de tout when I would like just a taste and not a whole meal. I personally find that eating until I am fit to bust is very uncomfortable and something I avoid. Each to his own! :)
-
Nichola and Dugan....Have you been at the Gin too?
We have never tried an all in meal in Calis before. We called on Sunday and Odd Job asked us to try the Sunday meal, so we did. However, I did not say we ate it all, and because there are three courses, it does not mean anyone must eat until they are fit to bust.
In fact, the only reason I mentioned it was because I was trying to let the O.P. see how cheaply one can eat if they wish.
Of course, you can go over to the Island and pay 350.00lira for a meal for two, this is the other end of the scale.
-
"Of course, you can go over to the Island and pay 350.00lira for a meal for two" that's miles dearer than in our neck of the woods. ;)

Where is the sahil lokantor keith . ;)

How is the new Lokanta in the main drag in Calis doing. We called in there several times recently and walked past on numerous occasions, but it was never what you would call "busy". Surprising, considering the comments on here in previous threads about Calis having no or very few traditional Turkish restaurants! I must say that everything we sampled was delicious and the price very reasonable. Such a shame if it doesn't survive.

Nichola and Dogan are the hosts at the place you do your French dabbling ...The Mozaik Bahce

Away from front efes are still 5. You can get a really nice meal for 10 at the corner (£2.86)
-
Yes I know Jacqui. Am slightly confused as to your reason for pointing it out. ???

5TL? How much of a loss are they making on that? Must be good margins elsewhere. Are they selling balik ekmek for 7TL to make up the loss?
-

maybe the slight spelling mistake?

It is a very good restaurant Nick, but I think lots of the tourists, brits etc don't use it because they don't sell the typical English dishes, you know, Chinese, Indian, Italian. sausage and chips etc. ;) ;D

Jackie's got this thing about pointing out spelling mastikes ! ;) ;)

Ah, that's the answer then. I assume that as posts are being scrutinised for perfection now, that said lady will be proof reading her posts then! ???
-
No doubt we'll be able to assist her and quickly point out any spelling mistakes and grammatical errors in her future posts. ;)
Innit, Yeah ?
-
Not about spelling mistakes at all. It seems like the said lady assumed this was the correct spelling for the restaurant and the name of the owner as she was mystified at the posting. So no mistakes made by her.
She is now turning this posting around to assure people it was merely spelling mistakes on her behalf and I am the villain of the peace....very cute.
-
and I'm totally lost here........ ???
-
Back to the plot. I noticed a lot of restaurants offering cocktails for 10 Lira last month. I had seen them for 15 lira in June, so they must reduce the prices at the end of the season.
-
I thought it was Nichola and Doğan. Oh well, I've only been there once.

Orf with their heads Jacqui..............they don't like it up 'em! ;D ;D ;D

Back to the food... Re the Calis lokanta. Kevin and I popped in there on Friday evening for a snack. We had soup, rice and a salad with lovely warm bread and couldn't get it down our necks quick enough 18tl for the two of us. Lovely stuff!
-

Thank you Colwyn, very calmly and sensibly put. My apologies to Dogan for spelling his name incorrectly.

I think since coming to Cali's over 6years ago prices have inflated! Especially the beer!
-
How much was it 6 years ago?
-
Yes, price have gone up, but Calis is not unusual, prices rise everywhere, that is inflation. However, six years ago we got around 2.20TL to the pound. We are now getting 3.50 TL. So we think the meals out are great value for money. No complaints from us. On average £30.00 for a meal for two and drinks is very good.
-
Jacqui - please - six years ago you would not have been paying £30.00 for a meal for two and drink.
-
No and 6 years ago I would not be getting 3.50TL to the pound either.
The last remark about the £30.00 was referring to prices now.
-
I'd want 'em to cut my steak up AND feed it to me at that price !
-
No and 6 years ago I would not be getting 3.50TL to the pound either.

So if the lire strengthens, would you still be happy to pay those prices, because you can bet your life that there will be no reductions to take account of a strengthening currency.
-
Let's assume that the meal six years ago cost £ 25 - you would have paid 55 lira
Six years on and the meal now costs £ 30 - you are paying 105lira
:)
-
And only a Scotsman would have worked that out so quick John. ;) :)
-
My point entirely H. And IF the lire strengthened to say 2.5 it is a very expensive meal indeed.
-

It''s a gift Des :)

H, I've done a trawl through back posts and, unfortunately, can't find any reference for 6 years ago -indeed not for anytime - that gives a stat which is similar to Jacqui's (i.e. get typical meal for £x). However, my memory tells that when I first came to Turkey/Calis in the 1990s people were raving about how cheap it was to eat out, saying it was cheaper to eat than in the UK by several times - perhaps Turkey a quarter of UK price. In my opinion that isn't true now. Those of us who live in the UK know places where we can eat equally as cheaply as in Turkey if not cheaper. I am not talking about pubs where you can get "Two meals for £7.99" or such like - and there are plenty of those. I am talking about places where you get ingredients prepared on the premises and freshly cooked. One of our favourites, a 20 minute walk from where we live, is a Moroccan restaurant where, whatever we order, we seem unable to break above the £22 barrier for 2 people/2 courses. If we go for dessert it gets to £25. Now, that doesn't include drinks. It is a BYO so we can spend as much, or as little, as we like on this. I think it helpful to subtract "drinks" from the statement of the bill. We might have an overpriced bottle of Turkish red when we are on holiday: you might have a couple of glasses of Efes. You can tell me that you can buy cheaper in Calis; but it won't be the "quarter UK price" that people used to talk about. Which is not surprising when you see the price of meat at the butchers - e.g. lamb, per kilo, is more than we pay in the UK.
-

Jacqui if I wasn't confused before I certainly am now!

I still think a meal with drinks for £30 is cheap. The other factor is the amount of spirits you get in a glass.
I bought my own tins of slimline tonic and just asked for gin. The amount of gin they put in the glass was something I had not realised before. It was about 3/4 full.
Anyway, I really do not care. Love Calis, love the people, love the restaurants, so who gives a flying fig whether we can find a restaurant in the U.K. for £30.00 a meal with drinks. It's a holiday, lets enjoy it. If someone does not like it, they can easily book and go to another country. ;) :P :-*
