Post by: Colwyn on January 03, 2012, 15:36:59 PM
Pokey Lafarge and the South City Three have posted videos of their New Year's Eve songs on the Jools Holland Hootenanny show plus some other stuff on:

I also saw these fine fellows on Jools' Hooternanny (copyright Pete Seeger) myself, and I like what I heard. 8) :)

I love new songs being written and performed in the style of the various American roots music.  I shall be purchasing some of their tracks to accompany another performer of American Roots music I also adore, C W Stoneking.  I saw him performing live in Brighton with a three piece backing band, musical perfection for me[^]

On a more general point, the whole Jools Holland show was once again a toure de force, full of fantastic performances from great acts like Betty Wright, Ruby Turner, Jessie J, Cindie Lauper and even Sandie Shaw.  If you haven't seen it it's still available on BBC Iplayer, http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0195p7h/Jools_Annual_Hootenanny_31_12_2011/but only for another four days - so don't miss it.

I thought Imelda May was particularly good (Ruby Turner always is, of course).

If this gig was last month at Concord 2 with his primitive horn orchestra, I was also there, wonderful stuff and a good story teller to boot.

Thanks UBT, I had not come across Stoneking before. I have been listening to a few tracks and deciding whether to buy King Hokum or Jungle Blues or both. Then I looked him up on Wiki (if you haven't sent yout donation, send it now folks!) and found he was born to American parents in Northern Territories, Australia and currently resides in - guess where - the great city of Bristol!

Yep he's one generation removed from the Mississippi Delta, and it looks like he has now moved to the old slave port on the Severn Delta:D ;) Although I am not sure what musical inspiration he'll find there, short of that well known western 'bubba' Reg Presley 8)

I'd also endorse what Mike says, buy both King Hokum and Jungle Blues.  One, if not both are sure to soon join your favourites list.

Yes were trying to do our bit for the economic crisis, by getting people to spend money.

BTW I like the new picture.  Was it that taken for a wedding or was it just to make a good impression on m'lud at a recent day in court?   I think we should be told which  ;)

Recent day in court me thinks,  Have a listen to Hugh Laurie's album as well, it has a real  new orleans bluesy jazz vibe to it, mind you I am not quite convinced about the voice but its a nice album all the same.

Agree Mike, it loses it with his lack of a voice.  Mr Laurie should do what Jools (no voice either) does so well, and bring in the voice talent to accompany a great band of musicians

Very dapper Colwyn, It would help Hugh Laurie no end to sing with his own accent instead of copying an American one, always a big mistake.

Title: Riverboat Soul
Post by: Colwyn on February 20, 2012, 17:38:48 PM
Well, finally, I got all the CDs. UBT suggested I comment on them. This is a little difficult in that I have virtually no musical knowledge and less skill. On my good days I flatter myself that I might be a passable wordsmith and so tend to emphasize lyrics in my appreciation of stuff. Anyway, here goes.

To begin with Pokey. This is roisterous, heel kicking stuff that swamps you - or doesn't - from the first listening. One track on his first album "Bad Times Come and Go (So I'm Told)" could be an anthem for our age but here's lots of other good stuff on both of them.

CW is a more difficult proposition. I found I had to spend a lot of time getting into the first album "King Hokum" (and waiting 6 weeks until the second one arrived). My immediate favourites were "Dodo Blues" and "Handyman Blues" but I couldn't say I know what either them are about.  I am uncomfortable about white people singing lyrics like "Don't go dancin' down the Darktown Strutter's Ball" but I guess that's my problem not CW's. The second album, "Jungle Blues", I found much easier/quicker to enjoy. There are a lot of really good tracks on here with bags of both style and wit. "Talking Lion Blues" is a great example of CW's humour in which he is mining in Africa when attacked by a talking lion. CW lays him out with a mighty punch and takes him into town to show his talking lion to the crowds. The lion tells them: "This man punched me and blackened my eye". CW is taken to court and sentenced to 25 years in prison, and he resolves not to mess with talking lions again. There is other good stuff here - "Jungle Blues", "Jungle Lullaby", "I Heard the Marchin of the Band" and the unexpectedly feminist "Housebound Blues". Lots of different musical styles in here too. And some more thoughtful pieces amongst the fun tracks.

Perhaps by the time I got the second CD I had tuned in to Stoneking's style, but I had also found out something about "Hokum" - in the title on the first track and also CW's own record label. I discovered that "hokum" was a quite popular form of entertainment in early 20th century America based on tall tales and nonsense and later came to be applied to blues based on sexual innuendo. My source of this information [see below] says "as far as I can make out, C.W. Stoneking eschews sexual innuendo in favour of hokum in the sense of tall tales". Well he can't have listened very closely to the two "Willy" tracks on the first album. But the last track on the second album "The Greatest Liar" - a talking piece orchestrated with creative heckling - is grand hokum in the earlier sense where CW tells what he has learned:
"through years of investigation ...
misinformation ...
and inebriation"

I think that may be a phrase I will recycle.
Overall, the whole CD is great fun.

CW Stonebridge and his Primitive Horn Orchestra reminds me in some ways of Spike Jones and his City Slickers. Which I have also ordered and should arrive tomorrow.

"CW Stonebridge and his Primitive Horn Orchestra"

CW Stoneking surely .

I do a version of "Jungle lullaby"  and it always goes down well,
I also do Dodo blues without the talking bit, which makes the song all the
more pointless but its a great song to fingerpick, I also do Jailhouse blues
as it has a good sing along chorus.

Yes, somehow I've gotten into the habit of misnaming him Stonebridge. Perhaps I am distracted by the old stone bridge over which I walk to get to my local - and over which Cromwell, Fairfax and the New Model Army marched to attack royalist Bristol in 1645. And pehaps I should submit posts to you for proof reading before putting them on the forum. As Scunner can confirm, my writing is getting a bit careless.

As to C W Upside down Bridge Stoneking I attach an example of his fine music for those of you not aware of him. I hope this is enough to encourage further listening ... enjoy ;)

Nice one Mike.  If I only had the talent I'd love to join you. :) :)

My family has bought me, now don't laugh, a banjo.  You see in recent years I've been drawn more and more towards learning to play an instrument, and the weapon of choice is the banjo.  I was too busy in my youthful years trying to change the world to take it on, but now I'm supposed to have more time to learn to play an instrument, only thing is I haven't found the time.  I've got to take some lessons in the next few months, before another big change in our lives this summer, and so your video has spurred me to get my ar$3 in gear.  So watch this space. 8)

BTW I was thinking of using Ramblin Usedbustickets as my stage name:D:D

The definition of perfect pitch is the ability to toss a Banjo into a skip from 50 yards.
If you intend to learn Banjo you had better get used to jokes like that.
on a lighter note there are plenty of fine banjo players on the sussex folk scene to watch,
and free lessons galore on the net so if you have the determination your soon learn.
There is an open mike night in Newhaven at the Ark every Wednesday night and Paul the host is a Banjo Player. Good luck with it "Ramblin boy" UBT.

Remember is very ditantly from my youngest days being allowed, under supervision, to listen to the BBC Light Programme. This was probably played on Uncle Max on a Saturday morning - Spike Jones' version of the William Tell Overture - put your money on Beetlebaum!

it produces the flattened 3rd and flattened 7th which turns a major scale into a minor scale.:D 8)

Mike tell me about the crowd at Concorde! Especially when the chimps (particularly the tall ones) began to push forward when Pokey and the Chaps kicked off.  I'd had enough after 10 minutes, so I retired to the bar area and watched it through the doors and on the big screen.

Sorry didn't see you, but given the crowd no surprise.

We thought Pokey was excellent, but next time we venture to see him, we'll try a less crowded venue. ;)

Of course, live is always better, but I think Pokey and SCT are really poor at transposing the toe-tapping power and pace of their music into their audio recordings. We were fortunate to find a place in a gallery about eight feet above the stage and had unobstructed view only a few feet from the lads (if we had leant over the railings we could have shaken hands with them!).

I liked the new Dodo, Mike.

Apart from buying Pokey CD and, with persuasion from you boys (Mike & Pete) CW CD as well I also got Emelda May "Mayhem" in the same parcel. Mostly it is unrelentingly upbeat - which makes it great to push me into doing my cardio-vascular exercises faster. An odd recommendation. I know, but it is what suits at the moment.
