Moles
« on: September 09, 2016, 20:54:32 PM »
A few weeks ago I went to my GP and during my visit I asked him to look at a mole on my back. He said it does not look serious but he would refer me to a specialist and they would just remove it with a dab of liquid nitrogen. The first time I knew I had a mole was when I went for a Turkish bath and somehow they managed to make it bleed.

When I turned up for my appointment the consultant asked me to take my shirt off. When he saw the mole his first comment was that it looks suspicious and it should be removed immediately. So it was into the operating theatre and it was removed. The mole was sent off for a biopsy.

It was a rather worrying couple of weeks waiting for the result. Luckily, the result came back that it was benign.

The consultant did spend time explaining that melanoma is becoming very common and it is due to people over exposing their skin to the sun.

I suppose what I trying to say is that we should some time looking at our skin and paying attention to any moles and carefully watching out for any changes. What I did learn it is better to be safe than sorry.

Good to hear it was benign OPO

Understandable that with sunshine being in such short supply in the UK many people spend their entire holiday lying in the sun. But this is exactly the sort of exposure that can cause terrible skin damage. and burning the skin is just the worst thing you can do.

Definitely better to be safe than sorry and think carefully about how much exposure your skin can cope with. Tans fade but cancer causes untold misery for a lifetime.

A few years ago I had a basal cell cancer removed from my shoulder. My surgeon instructed me to wear a broad-brimmed hat whilst out in the sunshine and spend most of my holiday time wearing a t- or short-sleeved shirt. Which I do.

Yes I had the same. and have to use high factor cream broad rimmed hat and keep covered up, even swim in a t shirt now.

Even clothing varies on how much it will protect you from the sun. You can buy a product called Sunguard that helps.

I've just had to have a mole removed from my penis.

Fortunately the police let me off with a caution this time.

( No animals were harmed in the making of this post. )

 ;)

Very glad to hear the mole was benign OPO. You had the procedure done here in Fethiye? If so, where  and how much was it?

Lissa, no had it done under the NHS.

We are very lucky in that we have 2 superb GPs who really work hard for the benefit of their patients.

On the point of covering up the consultant pointed out that wearing a shirt does not provide adequate cover as ultraviolet rays will penetrate the material. I was advised that I should put suncream on as well.

Thanks to all for your kind remarks.
