Burglary stories
« on: January 03, 2010, 17:14:39 PM »
While talking with my journalist friend here about things going on in the region, I mentioned to her that I have been hearing a lot about burglaries in the area, especially over the last couple of months it seems. As a result she is going to do an article in a NAtional English Newspaper....Can you help by sharing your stories? I told her I would mention it on the forum and she wrote this:

Hi my name is Ozlem Ozturk. I'm writing an article about crime in Fethiye and the surrounding regions during the Christmas break. I am interested in hearing from residents whose houses/cars were broken into over the last few weeks. As this is a sensitive issue, anonymity will be maintained for those who do not wish to share their personal details.

If you would like to talk about your unfortunate experience, please contact me via oozturk08@gmail.com by 5pm on Wednesday the 6th, 2010. The story will be published in a national English language newspaper.

And paint a picture of lawless Fethiye?, I think not.  Lets keep things in proportion please.

I think we need to entice people to Fethiye, not scare them off?
Would you see car thief stories from England in a Turkish newspaper? [:(!]

The point is that Fethiye is no great exception, burglaries are common in Altinkum, Bodrum, Marmaris etc., yet still nothing like the Spanish Costas - especially the areas 'manufactured' for retiring Brits, where walking with a handbag is almost considered as a challenge.

A story about burglaries in Fethiye will only result in a wildly skewed impression of the area - submit something if you must.

After years of dealing with the 'press' my experience is that they do not let the truth get in the way of a good story.

After years of dealing with ex-pats my experience is that they won't have to look for long for a good quote if the beer money is right

It's for a National English Newspaper in Turkey. While I don't believe one article will make the difference, I do think that the more the local law enforcement are made to look incompetent through the 'valuable' foreigners eyes, the more chance there is that they might address this issue. Anyway, it is a voluntary exercise.
