I know there are a few fans on here and I hope to get some info :)
I have Dark Side of the Moon (it's the law I believe) and know quite a few other songs through my dad being a big fan - but I don'[t know what they are or what album they are from. I've been watching quite a lot about the band on BBC4 and my interest is on the up.
So the question is, for someone who only has Dark Side, what album would you recommend he buys next?

The above contains rankings etc and reviews from listeners, some reviewers are a bit posey (poseurs) but you do get a sense of what is worth it and what is not. It also helps to identify which phase of the groups career is most appealing to you; See Emily Play is a far cry from Atom Heart Mother.

I agree with most said above, the Syd Barrett days, though creative I do find a bit "psychedelic" (the guy was a creative genius though totally insane !), but, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle are worth a listen and also an old compilation called Replicas (See Emily Play, Arnold Lane, Bike).
The "classic" Waters/Gilmour years, definitely Wish You were Here (possibly on par with Dark Side of the Moon), The Wall (amazing concept album), Animals (Floyd Marmite ! ;)), Final Cut (depressing).
The Gilmour years, A Momentary Lapse of Reason (passable), The Division Bell (Excellent).
There are also many good compilation albums done over the years, most containing variations of the same tracks !
Also Keith give Roger Waters' solo stuff a listen,(much featuring Eric Clapton), particularly The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, Radio K.A.O.S., and Amused to Death.
With regard to every music comment these are purely my individual preferences, but I hope it helps and I hope Dad enjoys exploring the "musical legends" ! :)

Really grateful for the suggestions - and as stated taken on board fully. Decided to go for the most recommended and went for Wish You Were Here which as promised is fantastic (although I can't say on par with Dark Side of the Moon - quite). Borrowed Animals and after a few listens I am struggling a little with it :)
One thing I wonder - if anyone is old enough to have been around at the time - the first album (with Syd Barrett) was obviously a psychedelic and progressive one for it's time - but was it any good? I've heard a couple of Syd's tracks and wondered not if it is a good album today, but whether it was considered good back when it was first released?

I think it's down to individual taste. I was never a great fan of really early Pink Floyd, just sounded a bit limp for my taste but I know people that think Syd's era was the best.

Too young unfortunately to comment on how the debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn, was first received by "Joe Public", but been a fan since '71. As I stated previously I do find the Syd era a little over psychedelic for my liking, that said I love See Emily Play (and Arnold Lane) and I consider it to be an "anthem" of the late 60's, but you can't take away the fact that the "Crazy Diamond" had a massive influence on the musical scene of the era and continues to influence musicians to this day. :)
P.S. - Cracking version of Arnold Lane done a few years ago by Dave Gilmour and David Bowie doing the vocals.

Just this moment read this thread/posts.... and as I am a massive Pink Floyd fan ( have been since `dark side of the moon `) I hated their earlier stuff in the late 60`s .... later `wish you were here` really consolidated them world wide....but if I had to choose one album ( I have about 7/8 ish albums on my i pod ) without doubt `PULSE` the live show double album ( or even better the dvd ) is my personal choice and the track `comfortably numb` every time I hear that, even now it makes me shiver and my eyes water its so brilliant ..plus there are many more on there which is excellent stuff and covers most of their careers bigger and popular tracks ... one of my biggest regrets is I had the chance of two tickets when they toured with this concert`PULSE` back in the 90`s ..at the time I had no one to accompany me and I didnt fancy going on my own .. in hindsight I would have been ok on my own ... so I blew my chance and forever I regretted it .. the concert and special effects ( see dvd ) was awesome ... enjoy :-)

correction on the above, just checked on my i pod.. in my opinion the best version of `comfortably numb` was from ``the best of pink floyd` disc 2 ) but then all their recordings of this track, ( like `wish you were here` track ) are all superb mmmmmmmmmm

actually the album `the best of pink floyd` discs1 and 2 is arguibly as good as `pulse` all this typing about floyd has started me playing there stuff right now ` shine on you crazy diamond` on now mmmmmmmm `us and them ` another classic `what do you want from me ` from `the division bell` another good album .. also check out the track `sorrow` on pulse... sooooooooooooooo many brilliant tracks !!!!!!

Go on you-tube there are a lot of full concerts live on there for you to listen to before you buy any DVDs, think in our house we have got every DVD and CD ever made by them.

Enjoying The Wall now - still not entirely convinced on Animals but it is starting to grow on me. One thing I have found is that the story of the band is every bit as engrossing as the music. If you wrote a story about a rock band you wouldn't go far wrong with the Pink Floyd story itself. So inspiring and so depressing - and totally fascinating - without Syd there wouldn't have been this or that...and without either Gilmour or Waters there wouldn't have been very much perhaps. What a tragedy that these two guys didn't work out that it wasn't all about who contributed what, it was about what the two of them contributed together...

The Wall is a classic concept album and a true work of art, I don't think "die hard" Floyd fans have ever been convinced about Animals (apart from the iconic sleeve artwork !). True about the history of the band, Syd Barrett was, I guess, your stereotypical "troubled genius", though there was much speculation over his mental state obviously not helped by the copious amounts of LSD and other psychedelic drugs the guy consumed (allegedly), though I suppose it may have assisted the creative process.
The Waters / Gilmour saga I think can also be attributed to the classic rock 'n roll "battle of the ego's", and as you say Keith, it is a great shame that the clash couldn't have been settled more amicably, though now they do seem to tolerate each other with very occasional appearances by Gilmour in Roger Water's tour of The Wall http://youtu.be/hUYzQaCCt2o. We should also remember we have been blessed with some amazing solo stuff by the two individuals as mentioned previously in the post (you must try some of that also on your Floyd exploration ! ;))
Let's not also forget the "unsung heroes", Rick Wright (who is sadly not with us any more :() and Nick Mason who both made a massive contribution to the music over the years.
As you say you "couldn't make it up !", but it has left an amazing musical legacy that continues to inspire other musicians and not only enthrals fans that have followed them for years, but people (many of them youngsters) who are just discovering the sheer brilliance of their music.

There's an excellent documentary series that crops up periodically on the box called "Classic Albums", for the music lover this series is generally superb, it takes an album (normally a musically iconic one) and strips it down to the bare bones track by track by means of interviews and archive footage, the interviews are not only with the artistes, but also the producers, managers, music pundits etc. The series covers Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and is quite simply amazing viewing if you ever get the chance to see it !. :)

Another fine documentary shown on BBC's Golden Age of the Album series this month; The making of the amazing Wish You Were Here album. Interviews with all sorts of people from the artistes to the stunt man they set on fire for the cover photo. It delves into the meanings of the songs, and giving insights into the mind and character of The Crazy Diamond Syd Barrett, Roger Waters disillusionment with the music industry, and his anti establishment views against "The Machine", it also brushes the possibility of the start of the Waters/Gilmour "rift".
All in all a must watch for Floyd fans.

Try Meddle and Echoes. See what you think. For me I like their instrumental stuff best. But eveyones different so try before you buy.

Re the Ummagumma Album, half of it was recorded live at Mothers club in Erdington Birmingham.I was there and the DJ was John Peel who was paid £10 a night.seated by me was Robert Plant in his old RAF great coat.He and Stevie Windwood,John Bonham and Jim Capaldi were there regulary watching other groups and sometimes joining in. One resident group was Black Sabbath. Happy days, (due to the ever present blue haze in the club )

It was a fantastic club,Joan Baez was a member,Bob Dillon called in,gigs included Muddy Waters,Howlin; Wolf,John Lee Hooker,Joe cocker,The Who,Deep Purple,Procal Harum,T Rex,Elton John,Clapton,John Mayall ect,ect,I had a pint with Gene Vincent. 8) 8)

I'm following this advice quite faithfully - love Wish You Were Here; The Wall has been worn out - moved onto Animals (not sure), Meddle (like some) and now struggling with The Final Cut. Also bought The Pros and Cons of Hitch hiking on CD for the car (remember CDs!?).
