Title: BroadBand in Calis
Post by: Wasp0 on April 12, 2019, 15:34:51 PM
Hello Guys & Gurls,

As you can see by my postings count, i am relatively new the this great form. My Wife and I own an Apartment in Calis near the Bowls club. Into our 3rd year of ownership and starting to do some BIG refurbishments in prep for us spending more time out here come the much deserved retirement from the work slog here in England.

However owning my own business in England (IT Company), i have to stay pretty connected on the 4 or 5 occasions per year i come over to the Apartment, and would like very much better internet connection than what i currently have. I have a 'WISP' service from Aydem (Wireless signal sent from Fethiye). Download is 5Mb, upload is (A Laugh, but this is NOT essential as the download speed for me). The drop outs at peak time are horrible and often the connection will drop altogether. PITA for working, and RPITA for my wife's televisual pleasures  ;).

Can anyone point me onto a better solution please, not involving having a telephone line installed as i believe big hoops have to be jumped through to have one of these. Currently only on visitors visa's so no residency if this makes a difference to any answers back.

Thank you for your advice, and lovin this site! Trying to positively contribute wherever i can.

Huge thanks for taking the time to answer my question Much Appreciated.

What will this give me download speed? How much per month? Is it a dish on the roof ?

Again, I thank you!

we went to aydem by the bp garage and shopping centre, did not need a residency, phone line broadband and FREE calls to landlines in UK now only 90tl per month and you can suspendit when not there but at that cost we just let it run.

Found getting a cable installed was very easy and no "big hoops" at all. Locate the nearest Telephone connection/distribution box. It is a must to get a native Turkish speaker who knows about internet /connections and PTT.
Have a connection box fitted to the outside of your apartment and cable with Cat six to a distribution point?repeater/modem thingy in your house and then get the PTT in to connect to that. You will need to screw a BIG hook or "D" ring above your outside box as the cable/wire that supports the internet cable has to be fixed to this by the PTT.
Since connecting several years ago we get normally 13 Megs download, often running three computers at a time and have had very few problems. We also have a home phone connected and are on a 200 gbts a month contract
Cost, depending on the amount of phone calls, around 140 TL month (Including line rental) Calls to UK etc are very cheap on land line.

Just wondered if you can run a Fire Stick with the broadband you have had installed. And how long did you have to wait for installation. Thankyou.

Iv recently had internet installed with Turk Telecom so far very happy, not sure of the speed he did say.
No cables just a modem and something was done in the leci box indoors, after signing up I received a text to tell me of my installation date which was x2 days after signing up, 88tl a month for unlimited and I have been given a number Incase I want to have a landline...
I do have residency so not sure if this makes a difference or not?
All in all very happy with everything...

UPDATE FROM OP:

Decided to go SkyFibreNet route, and went and chatted with Ahmet in his office. He talked us through the cosots and services, and we decided to go 10Mbs service with Android TV box.

Had the guys come out to fit it yesterday, so still early days to give a Thumbs up or down on service, but so far so good. Am impressed with stability of line when compared to my old service from Finet.
Finet would have sunk in style at peak time 18:00 onwards to nothing more than a Dribble and total loss of signal, but last night after our early Meal at Babzen we decided to come back and try out the TV. Not a flinch, not a flicker of the spinning wheel of buffer!
This morning (Thur) am up and typing this and service still rock steady 10.6 down. Early days yet, but Promising.

My only down on the service, is i am not allowed into the router (Owning my own IT Company in England, i know my way around routers) as i like to setup firewalls and DMZ and different WiFi's for my Guest's, but apparently i am not given access to my own router. Popping back in to have a chat with Ahmet today to find out why!

Will update further on Service.

That's strange I can get into my router's settings. If is a run of the mill Netgear or TP Link try the usual default user names and passwords (by the way I've changed mine!)

janemickey,  yes you can run a firestick out here providing internet is stable & speed above 5 most of the time, we pay 55TL month with finet & only pay when we use which is every month  ;D no need for a VPN & plenty of free apps for live TV, movies & basically anything you normally pay for  : :)

I was at the skyfibrenet office last week and they told me that installation at present would be typically be 2/4 days after ordering. However, one problem you might encounter is the new ID fraud rules. Ahmet said they now require either your residency details or a foreigners ID number that is obtained from the GOC office behind the PTT.  To get this you will need a copy of your passport, passport size photo and either a copy  of your tapu or rental agreement. This I understand will be available c. a day after you take in the relevant documentation"

We had sky fibre net installed, but first we had to get the  foreigners ID number, exactly as the key clan says.  Once we took this number to Ahmet, it was installed the next day.

@Wasp0: have you had a chance to find out about accessing your router? How's the service been?

I surmise from their website some/all of their service is microwave from their towers via a mini dish...is this the service you have?

Trainer yes but will probably need a VPN to access Netflix & amazon prime,  if you dont have a VPN theres plenty of free apps that enable Netflix etc without having to pay for  : :)
