It means the voice grated - similar to nails on a blackboard.  Imagine a stray cinder from the fire getting trapped between the bottom of a door and a hard floor - no carpet   ;)

Yes a Scouse expression for a terrible noise, which came from a time when cold cinders where taken from a fire in the morning and put outside in the bin, if any cinders were dropped near the door and caught between the door and the stone floor the noise they made was terrible.  My Grandmother,Mother and all the people I knew in Liverpool used this expression.
Just like if someone hurt themselves the retort would be "It will be a pigs foot in the morning"   No idea where that came from, but I still say this to my Granddaughter now.
