Keeping our mobile alive!
« on: January 12, 2005, 15:46:01 PM »
We have a Turkish sim card which we bought last year and which saved us a fortune on our 3 visits. We intend to use it again this year but it will have been inactive from September 04 until May 05- will it still be alive? Does anyone know if you have to keep it going somehow?
:)Its an Aria by the way- I think theyve changed names but I cant remember what to.

If there was credit on it you will have probably lost it now, you may have lost the number also I think its 6 mths and the number goes as well if not used or topped up.We leave ours with a freind there you uses it now and again and tops it up as neccessary

Hi Cavfan,

Excuse my ignorance but do these savings include cheaper international calls, or just local ones?

Glen.

Not too sure but cant imagine you get savings on International , but the savings on local , which we needed when our property purchase was going through, were well worth the intial outlay for the sim.
Also we use it most for text messages which are much cheaper than using a UK mobile. We bought  9.5 million TL card- got 300 units of credit, each text to a Uk mobile took 3 units. So 100 texts for around £4- each text from my UK mobile was 50p so 100 texts would be £50- big dif!

We top up our phones with 250 units for normally 21MTL. We both phone UK and find that we can have a good chat for about 20 units;  texts while in Turkey are two units per text. When we bought our sim cards at the TURKCELL shop in Fethiye, we were told that the sim would be lost after 6 months without use and any credits would be lost after 3 months.
Sylvia, what you say is interesting, as Sept to May is greater than 6 months, so maybe the rules are not too rigidly enforced.

We've left our mobile with a friend who has promised to top it up for us, (hopefully they've remembered lol)

Yeah, I leave my sim with a friend, cos Turkcell runs out after 3mths I think, that's what i heard anyway 9.5mtl for 100 units, 21mtl for 250 units, 3 units a text to England, 2 units to scarlett bar to order our drinks, but it's nothing if I shout across to them, lol, but at least it doesn't take anything off sim when someone phones me from England. A 250 unit Turkcell top-up now costs 21.5 YTL and you don`t get any bonus credits now.
