Title: One Way Ticket now Purchased
Post by: Rimms on August 30, 2011, 18:13:42 PM
Well, we have been and gone and done it ! One ways booked for Thursday March 1st 2012. Took the Turkish airline option as they now have a same day connecting flight from Istanbul down to Dalaman.

Chris has already packed in work, I go through to the end of the year before retiring (again) then Xmas with the family, Paul Carrack in Liverpool in February and then the big one in March.

It's quite spooky to think that we have to get all of our worldly goods into just 4 suitcases, two in September then another couple in March. I'm sure we will manage.

It's a big step but I guess we can always come back to the UK if things don't work out, we decided not to sell the house, just in case. So roll on March and let the adventure begin.

Well done Rimms and may you have a trouble free move.

But how did you manage only 4 suitcases, we have taken over dozens and still have a house full of stuff to get rid of before we make the move.

Went to Africa in around 1981 with 4 suitcases.
1988, 8 steel trunks and a 24 foot sailboat. Abu dhabi to Kemer Turkey.
2000 150 kg excess baggage. Bodrum to Cheadle.
2006, 20 foot container Muscat to Pakistan
2009 20 foot to Qatar
2011 5 suitcases, whife and dog home to Fethiye.

( And I missed a few out) Ups and downs of working overseas.

LOL

You are a professional at this lark Steve, just making a list, so far, Ipod, Nintendo and Laptop. And as for "NO OPENING A BAR IDEAS!!!" absoluteley no chance, working in Turkey simply doesn't seem to work for anyone. I will be spending my time learning a bit of the language, seeing the country and house swapping with friends and family around the UK, Far East and in New Zealand.

Best of luck and all the best for your move Rimms, albeit keeping a bolthole in the UK shows some doubt. Anybody got past about five years in TR whilst retaining a place in the UK I wonder. When you reside here you will knock me back to third place in the longest serving active CBF member living in TR... LOL. But I shall retire from posting in 55days after gaining a wealth of knowledge and leave it to the new members.

Brilliant and wish you loads of luck with your move. One question to Tel though...... What is the reason behind your comment about not posting any more after 55 days . Are you going to win the lottery and disappear to sunnier places .

It was Tel who made the comment, I'm sure he will explain later[?]

Thanks for the good wishes all. Your hints and tips are also really useful.

So here is the Challenge. We have 40 kilos of luggage allowance. What 'Must Have' items would you pack?

Swimsuit & towel, anything else get here as & when you need it!

or

Cheese, Ham, Sausages, Bacon, Baileys & a visit to me upon arrival!

Book an extra 20kg luggage allowance and bring three suitcases!

We did at the end of May when we came over with our worldly goods crammed into 3 suitcases and hand luggage. Oh and not forgetting two dogs in the hold! We've got a few bits and bobs stored in a cupboard in the UK which we will probably dip into when we go over again, but apart from that, everything went! Car boots, auctions, charity shops and the tip!

Carolyn, that's a great idea and I will get on to Turkish Airlines to see if I can do that. I have lots of electrical stuff and was wondering if I will have a problem bringing them into the country, two laptops, Ipad, Ipod Iphone, and Wii and that's before I have really looked. We are keeping the house on here in the UK so intend to leave a big 'visitors box' in the garage which we will fill with items we want bringing over (easy Supacabby !!) and we will tell everyone who comes out to visit us that they each have to bring one thing from the visitors box, it's a sort of stealth way of getting our bits n pieces out there.

All the best George and that is a good idea you have about the visitors box lol.

We came in February with 20kgs each and no where to live. This time last year I was in meltdown panicking about it all!
In hindsight I wish Id brought less clothes, as there are so many car boots, table top sales, charity shops etc that theyre so easy to replace.
I wish Id brought more personal bits and pieces instead and some basic kitchen things like scales, cake tins etc which are dearer here.
Some airlines let you bring your laptop as extra hand luggage, worth checking. You shouldnt have any problem with the electrical items, they only see to care about items that receive info, like tv's.
The visitor box is a great idea, we've gradually had a few bits brought over by family and it is nice having a few bits to make it feel homely.
The whole experience did show me though how little you really need to get by, and all the worrying just wasnt warranted.

Good luck! Relax and just look forward to it x

I had a visitors box but the people who swore they would visit laods haven't been - the end result is 2 years on I'm fed up iwth having stuff stored in other peoples attics as well as a small storage unit - I have parcelled some of it up and posted it to myself - a tea chest size parcel weighing 19kgs with Parcel2Go is just £39.00 plus insurance.  Very useful for sending extra clothes or bedding.  which byt he way UK bedding is much better than the turkish :-)  Do wear a winter coat over and bring waterproof boots - when it rains it rains - if you are bringing summer clothes make sure they are cotton or linen - anything else will be too hot and in my case I dress more coservatively now that I live here all the time so the frocks I used to wear on holiday that I packed and shipped have never been worn. My DVD player came in my hand luggage with my laptop - not a problem.  I've snet myself all sorts of smaller test parcels using different methods and they have all arrived safely.

The tea chest parcel idea sounds brilliant, some questions please :

What do you pack your stuff in to make sure it arrives in good condition?

Do you post it to your address in Calis or yo a PO box number?

Is there any problem with customs?

How long does the parcel take to arrive?

At £39 for 19kg, it sounds a much cheaper way than paying for excess luggage on the plane.

I have moved some fragile items over & bubblewrapped everything, put the package into a fairly strong box & filled the voids with polystyrene chippings. Mostly this stuff came over in my hold luggage & nothing was broken on arrival

There are limits on the value of items - it used to be under £150 but believe it is now £100 - they usually increase it for a 3 week window around Bayram and also Christmas to allow people to send gifts.   I usually declare mine at £75. I haven't sent anything fragile but have sent household items, clothes, shoes, bags and personal paperwork - the odd tin of tuna may have found it's way in.  U usually wrap the more fragile stuff in clothes and place inside another bag.  I psot to my address in Calis.  I've not had a problem with customs - but send them with good intervals in between.  Parcels by Royal Mail take between 7 and 21 days - no reasons why some take longer - with Parcel2Go between a week and 2 weeks.  It seems to be the same price up to 25kgs.

I think it's sometimes hard to choose what to bring, but I know from past experience as others have said that you don't need all the things you think you do. Some decent books will be my priority. :)

Thank you, good to know. There's nothing worse than not having a good book. Parcels to go also sounds good, not the first time this has been said. Thanks.
